GENERAL SUMMARY:
As a key strategic executive for MyMichigan Health System, the Chief Health Informatics Officer (CHIO) will develop and execute strategies to optimize and transform health care delivery models and the clinician-patient experience through the smart use of the EHR, digital tools, advanced technologies, services and processes. The CHIO will report to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) with a dotted line relationship with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
The CHIO will develop these strategies in collaboration with executive and clinical leaders taking into consideration clinical, administrative, operational, research and educational needs of the organization.
The CHIO will work collaboratively to set the digital health vision and align the use of technology with health system strategies and key clinical priorities. The CHIO serves and leader of technology enabled clinical transformation by setting the tone, spurring enthusiasm, and challenging current wisdom.
Change management for clinicians will be a key priority for the CHIO. As the change agent, the CHIO will engage multi-disciplinary teams to build enabling capabilities that reimagine care delivery and processes that support personalized patient experiences and promoting the health and well-being of clinicians. The CHIO will need to balance the excitement and investment in digital health technologies with the resources such changes bring to the organization in what will be a complex and multifaceted endeavor.
The CHIO has the dual responsibility to maintain and incrementally improve the EHR and core technology systems and platforms while also leading and supporting digital transformation activities. This will require striking the right balance between short-term improvement and long-term value when exploring new opportunities in the digital world while addressing the existing operational and financial challenges.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
(15%)*Ensure the EMR and other systems are being configured to maximize the available functionality.

(10%)*Ensure EMR and other products providers use are compliant with current regulations.

(10%)*Understand and assist with quality initiatives and other reportable metrics.

(10%)*Ensuring strategies, plans and materials used to train new and existing providers are based on best practices and are being used effectively by those responsible for provider training.

(5%)*Be knowledgeable regarding future Epic development that will enhance patient care, improve provider well-being, and seamlessly integrate with or replace current systems.

(15%)*Collaborate with other teams at all levels within the health system where providers will be impacted and/or responsible for clinical care delivery, focusing on the needs of the providers and the patient community to deliver high value care. The CHIO will participate in population health initiatives to help ensure people, process and technology align to enhance such high value care.

(10%)*Manage Assistant CHIO team.

(25%)*Aligning digital strategy with Health System priorities and strategies.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensure the EMR and other systems are being configured to maximize the available functionality.

Be familiar with and work to optimize current functionality

Work with analyst team to troubleshoot issues where current configuration appears to not meet the needs of users and departments

Review and consider implementation of Epic-delivered AI solutions

Participate in work to review and decide on future upgrades

Understand and participate in change control

In conjunction with the VPMAs, counsel providers refusing to work appropriately within the EMR to care for patients

Ensuring strategies, plans and materials used to train new and existing providers are based on best practices and are being used effectively by those responsible for provider training.

Review of metrics on performance of providers as a whole in comparison to other US Epic installations to identify trends and plan, in cooperation with the Principal Trainers, strategies to bring the health system to one of the highest performing installations

Be knowledgeable regarding future Epic development in areas needing improvement currently.

When considering products that might improve workflow, be able to work with Epic to evaluate current and future functionality that might obviate the need for third party add on products. Support an “Epic first” strategy where appropriate

Be able to consider and evaluate the true cost of software including purchase, build and configuration, training, maintenance, user support, system administration, future upgrades

Evaluate, with the IT team, any request for new 3rd party to ensure all governance, ownership, financing, and legacy support and costs have been considered.

Collaborate with other teams where providers will be impacted and/or responsible for part of the workflow.

  • Evaluate and appoint Regional CMIOs
  • Delegate, where appropriate, certain tasks to the Regional CMIOs. Regional CMIO role is described elsewhere. Regional CMIO will work with, not in place of, the CHIO on many of the responsibilities listed above.

Align digital strategies with Health System priorities and strategies

  • As necessary, support the fiscal year priorities of MyMichigan Health as it relates to IT initiatives and provider input

REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSURES:

NP or PA required. MD or DO preferred. Physician or Advanced Practice Provider with an unrestricted license and Board Certification in their specialty.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND SKILLS:

A minimum of 5 years experience practicing in an Epic health care system.

Significant leadership experience in a health care system as a problem solver, collaboration builder and global thinker when dealing with complex healthcare problems.

Experience coaching, mentoring, leading and advising health care providers, especially in the use of clinical information systems to provide high quality patient care.

Strong interpersonal skills with a high emotional IQ.

Able to partner with a dynamic leadership team and navigate enterprise politics and matrixed relationships. Formal training and board certification in clinical informatics preferred.

High level Epic experience as a Physician Builder, Power User, analyst or trainer preferred.

Comfortable in challenging the status quo and advocating for digital transformation to improve the patient and provider experience.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
