Job Purpose:

The Pediatric Skilled Nursing (PSN) Child Care Worker is responsible for successful individualized educational programs for students with special health care needs; including assessment, curriculum implementation, physical, emotional, intellectual and social growth, as well as effective program communication.

Essential Job Functions:
1. Develop and organize daily program plans, curriculum, and materials with the assistance of nursing staff, ensuring student’s needs are being met throughout the day based on the child’s strengths and weaknesses.
2. Understand and communicate the needs of children, their families, and the relationship between these needs
3. Direct individual and small group instruction to implement child-based educational and developmental goals
4. Engage in developmental assessment of individual children and regularly monitor educational progress
5. Demonstrate sensitivity and the ability to work with a diverse population of children with special health care needs
6. Assist in the orientation of parents to the PSN community and communicate with parents and child’s support team on a regular basis
7. Plan and provide training and support for center staff and families regarding established goals
8. Understand typical and atypical child development from birth through 21 years of age
9. Provide assistance to student’s personal hygiene needs as necessary
10. Complies with program’s policies and procedures for cleaning and disinfecting within the department.

Required Technical Skills, Experience, Education, and Credentials:
1. Experience providing or assisting in the delivery of childcare in a childcare setting.
2. Must either be CPR certified at the start of employment or complete CPR certification course within 90 days of the start of employment. Must maintain active CPR certification through periodic renewal as dictated by the certification.
3. Pass a pre-employment physical examination, drug screen, TB test and background checks
4. High School Diploma or equivalent required with a Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field preferred
5. Experience with children with special health care needs and/or in an inclusive setting is preferred
6. Experience in sensory integration and augmentative communication systems are desired
7. Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
8. Thorough the knowledge of the principles and techniques of early childhood education and developmentally appropriate practices and is able to translate this knowledge into practical application within the classroom environment
9. Knowledge of the rules and regulations, which apply to the eligibility and provision of special education services in the state of Wisconsin
10. Experience with pediatric special needs clients is preferred.
