Responsibilities:
The Clinical Laboratory / Medical Technologist will work Regular Full-Time Monday to Friday, 12:30PM - 11PM with rotating Weekends/Holidays.

As measured by direct or indirect supervisory observation and/or co-worker feedback, the Clinical Laboratory (CLT) / Medical Technologist (MT) demonstrates skills in the following duties and responsibilities. Examples of these include but are not limited to the following areas of responsibility listed below.

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST DUTIES:
  • The Clinical Laboratory (CLT) / Medical Technologist (MT) performs and verifies (reports) laboratory tests and/or prepares products for transfusion on acceptable specimens.
  • Laboratory test results need to be technically accurate and medically reliable, in accordance with established procedures and protocols, and available in a timely manner.
  • Performs applicable general Laboratory and Blood Bank Quality Control (QC) per SOP.
  • Prioritizes workflow for the laboratory on an ongoing basis in order to maintain established turnaround times (Routine, Timed, STAT, etc.).
  • The Clinical Laboratory (CLT) / Medical Technologist (MT) may assist in directing support staff as needed to meet hospital or laboratory needs.
  • Provides technical assistance to extent of knowledge base.
  • Redirects inquiries as needed to appropriate lab and network resources. Handles crisis situations professionally.
  • May assume charge responsibility in the absence of an on-duty Technical Supervisor only if the MT has six (6) years experience as a NYS-licensed Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
  • May participate in QC Peer Data submission, as well as ongoing QC result management for the laboratory.
  • May assist with Blood Bank Inventory Management Program (ordering/ crediting/ transferring/ discarding expired units).
  • Responsible for monitoring the LFH Lab (LIS) Epic Beaker Outstanding List and In-Basket throughout the shift.
  • Reviews (LIS) Epic Beaker Receiving/ Expected Lists throughout the shift, ensuring that samples listed have been accounted for, processed and/or stored appropriately.
  • Completes and Documents Critical Lab Value Calls per SOP, monitored via Epic Beaker Follow-Up Worklist.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment, instruments, reagents and/or supplies required in performance of job responsibilities per SOP.
  • Performs and documents scheduled instrument maintenance and/or calibrations following approved procedures and within the defined frequency.
  • Assists with biannual calibration-verification/ linearity testing and inter-lab correlations as per regulations and/or network schedule.
  • Identifies instrument problems and handles primary and secondary responsibility for troubleshooting and documentation according to approved procedures. Seldom requires assistance to resolve routine instrument problems. Works with manufacturer technical and service staff to resolve other issues identified. Keeps the Dept. Director aware of the corrective action.
  • The Clinical Laboratory (CLT) / Medical Technologist (MT) reports a variance from normal procedures and/or instrument malfunctions to the Dept. Director.
  • Follows up appropriately in an independent manner when problems are encountered. Is able to assess a problematic situation, consider alternatives and choose the appropriate course of action.
  • Actively participates in validations of new reagents / tests or instruments.
  • The Clinical Laboratory (CLT) / Medical Technologist (MT) maintains a tidy and orderly work area such that coworkers can readily follow and pick-up workflow. Restocks supplies and/or reagents as depleted.
  • Cleans immediate work area/ countertop surfaces with hospital-provided disinfectant at end of shift, for infection control purposes.
  • Documents appropriate follow-through, and communicates pending work to next shift.
  • Is self-directed and works independently to coordinate technical functions and other lab activities while ensuring adherence to regulations and service to laboratory customers.
  • Sets an example in work performance and team building, concern for patients and co-workers by maintaining a positive interpersonal approach and demeanor. Utilizes time efficiently and offers to help others when work in assigned area is complete.
  • May participate in laboratory staff competency assessments.
  • May assist in the training process of students and/or orientation of new personnel.
  • May serve as trainer in regards to Blood Bank or Laboratory Information Systems (if trained as Credentialed trainer).
  • Works with the Dept. Director to assure compliance with accrediting and regulatory agency standards.
  • Assists the Dept. Director with the development of proposals for improved efficiency, safety or performance improvement initiatives, offering suggestions with follow-through.
  • May participate in instrument purchase decisions as a subsidiary member of the Bassett Network of Clinical Labs.
  • Assists laboratory management in dissemination of information and updates as needed. Ensures follow-up has occurred for laboratory related items relayed via the communication boards or electronic mail.
  • Performs laboratory proficiency testing (PT) per SOP. May be assigned Submitter status, to help maintain timely electronic PT reporting in the absence of the Dept. Director.
  • May oversee additional projects with minimal instruction or oversight. Reports any incomplete assignments to assure continuity of work. Meets deadline for completion, or communicates in advance if assigned deadlines cannot be met.
  • May participates in updating and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOP) with Dept. Director.
  • Adapts to changing technology. Accepts and performs new procedures with an average amount of supervision and performs such procedures without difficulty after training.
  • May participate in Laboratory Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement Initiatives, as requested.
  • Attains and documents a minimum of 12 units of continuing education (CE) annually, per NYSDOH CLEP standards.
  • Phlebotomy: may obtain blood specimens by performing venipuncture or skin puncture (with minimal discomfort to patient) following Standard Precautions/SOP. Able to track collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection on all tubes or specimen containers. Ensures that two (2) patient identifiers are on all specimens, labeling all at the patient bedside/ point of collection. DUTIES APPLICABLE TO ALL CLINICAL LABORATORY STAFFEnhances healthcare career and Little Falls Hospital reputation by accepting ownership for Service Excellence and exploring opportunities to add value to job assignments. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and assigned learning (i.e., successful on-time completion of Healthstream assignments) and earning number of Continuing Education credits as mandated by regulatory agencies such as NYSDOH.
  • Follows Standard Precautions at all times, and uses Laboratory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) appropriately.
  • Understands the existing and potential hazards in the work area in such a way as to prevent injury/illness by following hospital and laboratory health and safety policies (i.e., use of gloves, no food or beverage consumption, no application of cosmetics or lip balm unless in designated CLEAN ROOM/ areas).
  • If injured at work (i.e., occupational exposure/ needlestick) reports occurrence to on-duty laboratory or house supervisor in a prompt manner.
  • Corrects and/or reports any safety hazard or malfunctioning of equipment within work shift to the appropriate individuals (on-duty supervisors or Facility staff).
  • Attends in-services and departmental staff meetings. Reviews minutes of any missed meetings or in-services as applicable.
  • Demonstrates collaborative practice, support and respect for each team member.
  • Maintains patient and proficiency testing confidentiality.
  • Maintains the dignity of all people encountered through job experience at Little Falls Hospital.
  • Conducts oneself in a manner to reduce friction between other departments and fellow co-workers, knowing that healthcare workers need to maintain the ability focus on job tasks to provide optimal patient care.
  • Keeps the Dept. Director informed, and communicates effectively to other staff; to ensure vital patient and operational information is shared among co-workers and shifts (whiteboards, email, section Communication Books, verbal, etc). Maintains competency within areas of responsibility by completing annual Competency Assessment/ requirements as defined by departmental policy.
  • Resolves unusual or unclear test orders by contacting the physician, nursing unit, or medical office; addressing unresolved issues.
  • Uses reagents and supplies prudently and takes timely and appropriate action when supplies are noted to be low, so as not to overstock or exhaust supplies. Receives and puts away supplies in a timely and temperature-appropriate manner, rotating stock and dating products as far as Receipt and Open dates.
  • Follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures related to compliance, to assure current Centers for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS) regulations are upheld.
  • Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal/state/JCAHO standards, and complying with legal regulations.
  • Performs similar or related duties as necessary (i.e., answering telephone calls and inquiries, test order-entry, centrifugation/ aliquoting of specimens, preparing specimens for send-out batches, putting away inventory, etc.).
Qualifications:
Bassett Healthcare Network follows the New York State and New York State Department of Health COVID-19 vaccine mandates for healthcare workers. This mandate requires COVID-19 vaccinations for personnel working for or on behalf of our hospitals and nursing homes. The New York State mandate allows for medical exemptions and religious accommodations, when appropriate. Education:
  • Candidates must be qualified as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in accordance with New York State Department of Health regulations.
Licensure/Certificates:
  • Licensure by NYS SED as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, required. Or licensure- eligible with a limited permit or limited license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
  • Limited Permit is granted to individuals that meet the educational requirements for licensure except for the licensing examination which must be taken within one year from the issuance of a limited permit.
Experience:
  • Experience in a standard laboratory methodology, required.
  • Previous clinical laboratory experience, preferred.
Skills:
  • Strong attention to detail, precision, and commitment to accuracy are essential.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to build rapport quickly, develop trust, sustain working relationships, and represent LFH positively in internal and external meetings is required.
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills are required.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including but not limited to, Excel, Word, and Power Point, preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • Position requires extensive standing, routine walking, occasional sitting, and some repetitive hand motions.
  • Ability to push/pull up to 50 lbs and lift objects of up to 50 lbs is occasionally required.
  • Position includes exposure to moving electro-mechanical parts, some loud noises, and infectious substances.
  • Position requires extensive close visual work, requiring visual acuity.
  • Position requires some telephone communication, requiring the ability to listen and respond clearly.
  • Some laboratory tests performed are dependent on color determination. Ability to differentiate colors is required to perform these tests.
