Job description
Responsible for providing competent credit analysis for complex loan transactions, training for credit and lending personnel, and assistance in completion of special projects and assignments. Underwrites loan requests for business, commercial real estate, and/or agribusiness borrowers, including reviewing and analyzing financial and industry data, borrower performance and management capabilities. Reviews loan presentations and provide feedback to less experienced credit analysts and lenders as to loan structure, the quality of the analysis and accuracy of the risk rating. Proficient knowledge of commercial loan documentation with the ability to determine that the loan file documentation is complete and properly executed to ensure adequate enforceability of the CU’s lien position. A Credit Analyst III should be able to assist in identifying portfolio underwriting risks and represent the credit department on internal committees.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform the initial credit analysis, including financial statement spreads, business and personal debt service coverage calculations, review of past payment history, etc. to determine if customer loan requests satisfy policy and procedure guidelines. Assess the loan request and provide questions and comments and make recommendations to loan officers on loan structure and when loan requests fall outside of policy. Thorough understanding of SBA, FSA, USDA, etc. loan programs and when they should be required. Recommend procedural changes to Head of Credit Risk when inconsistencies are discovered during the underwriting process.
- Prepare objective written loan presentations and annual reviews on the most complex of credits for Loan Officers and Executive Loan Committee including analyzing financial condition, operating performance, and repayment ability of commercial borrowers utilizing financial statements and/or tax returns, collateral documentation, information from borrower interviews, and industry and economic data. Compare liquidity, profitability, and credit histories of businesses being evaluated with those in the same industry and, when possible, similar geographic location. Accurate covenant testing and identifying and monitoring all loan policy exceptions are critical to the position.
- Review credit write-ups of less-experienced analysts and lenders to ensure sufficient analysis is performed and commensurate with the credit’s risk profile. Confirm the accuracy of risk rating.
- Support the achievement of organizational objectives and the success of individual colleagues through the timely completion of various reports and projects, mentorship of less tenured lenders, and willingness to effect and adapt to change. Assist auditors and examiners in their periodic reviews.
- Interact directly with borrowers and lenders, as appropriate; to gather the information required to make recommendations on credit decisions and back-up the relationship managers for credit related inquiries.
- Must comply with all company policies and procedures, applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
Knowledge and Skills
Experience
Minimum of 5-7+ years' experience as a credit analyst in a structured commercial banking and/or agribusiness environment. Proficient knowledge of commercial lending practices and industry standards.
Education/Certifications/Licenses
Bachelor's degree in business, finance or accounting or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience. Accredited commercial lending program such as Omega Performance’s “Commercial Loans To Small Business” required. Industry certification in commercial credit such as RMA’s Credit Risk Certificate required.
Interpersonal Skills
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with members, employees, and outside service providers. A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required to be an effective subject matter expert in the position. In-depth dialogues, conversations and explanations with customers, direct and indirect reports, and outside vendors of a sensitive and/or highly confidential nature is a normal part of the day-to-day experience. Communications can involve motivating, influencing, educating and/or advising others on matters of significance.
Other Skills
Ability to comprehend and utilize appraisal reports, environmental site assessments, UCC searches, title work, surveys, and loan documentation. Ability to follow detailed instructions on wide range of procedures requiring superb analytical skills, detailed documentation, and sound judgement. Experience with Microsoft Office Software required; exposure to Suntell or similar loan underwriting software a plus. Must have proficient typing and computer skills.

Physical Requirements
Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in an emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance.
Working Conditions
Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.

Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
