Title: Communicable Disease Investigator

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live In Michigan

Purpose: The person in this position actively conducts communicable diseases case investigation interviews and data entry in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System on behalf of Michigan’s local health departments in a surge capacity. This person interacts with local health departments, infection control providers and clinical providers, and communicable diseases cases.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Complete communicable diseases case investigations as assigned.
  • Complete data cleaning projects as assigned.
  • Complete data entry into the Michigan Disease Surveillance System.
  • Escalate issues of public health concern to supervisor.
  • Ask clarifying question of supervisor as needed.
  • Collaborate on communicable disease investigations with high-risk facilities.
  • Assess duplicate cases and issues related to data quality.
  • Provide consultation to medical providers and local health departments: explain reporting process and purpose, reporting laws, explain case definition and changes in case reporting forms; assist with problem-solving.
  • Consolidate information from updated case reports. Perform follow-up on missing or discrepant information. Enter that information into MDSS.
  • Phone Consultation to Local Health Departments and Medical providers for surveillance and reporting issues.
  • Maintain individual site files by recording communications and activities with each case.
  • Review/comment on draft documents produced by MDHHS staff, CDC, and other outside sources; compose program/departmental response to various documents as requested.
  • Assist with review and updating of procedural references and protocols for surveillance staff.
  • Always represent the best interest of MDHHS and MPHI.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree in any major, majors in public health, statistics, health care, nursing, informatics, etc. are preferred.

Experience: No specific experience required.

  • Maintains flexible work hours and able to perform job duties.
  • May need evening and weekend coverage.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: 100% remote work environment. Viewing a CRT or VDT screen over 75% of the time. Valid vehicle operator’s license to attend off-site meetings, conferences, and trainings. This position may require evening and weekend shifts.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position will be part of a high-functioning team working to prevent the spread of communicable diseases in Michigan.
