Department Summary
The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) is a unique residential program for high school-aged Texas students who are high achievers and interested in mathematics and science. While living on campus in McConnell Hall, students in this two-year program complete a rigorous academic curriculum of college coursework at the University of North Texas (UNT). Instruction is by University faculty. There are no high school courses taught, but students enjoy many of the activities of high school and the company of age mates who are intellectual peers.

Position Overview

This person seves as a customer service agent and general caretaker to students in the residence hall. Task include the implementation of student development concepts through programs and discipline and through the advising of student organizations and activities. This person is also responsible for supervising and providing guidance and professional development opportunities to Program Advisors, Resident Assistants, and Desk Personnel. Other tasks include monitoring housekeeping and upkeep of facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and two years of residence life, student services, counseling, or related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply advising techniques to support student needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Physical and emotional ability to work long and irregular hours, occasionally involving emotional stress and interrupted sleep.
  • Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.


Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
Previous university residence hall experience
Good driving record and comfort driving students in a 12 passenger van
Able to walk three flights of stairs and do rounds around and inside McConnell Hall
Experience working with adolescents either as a group advisor or in a school setting
Previous supervision of part and full time staff
  • Familiarity with University of North Texas and Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science is a bonus, Proficient with the Microsoft suite of software, (Word, Access, Excel, Power Point)

Monday-Friday 8am-5pm with some evenings, weekends, and on-call shifts

Job Duties

o

RA/PA staff meeting – 2 hours weekly, One to One Meetings with RAs – 30 minutes biweekly, Disciplinary Hearings – estimated 4-6 hours weekly Meetings should occur on a scheduled, consistent basis. No individual meeting postponed more than twice. Maintains regular and consistent contact with all staff listed.


o

Student Life Staff meeting – 2 hours weekly, Housing Staff meeting – 3 hours biweekly, Hall Director Advisor Meeting 1 hr. weekly, Student Group Meetings. Student Group Executive Board Meetings. Prompt Attendance, Excused absences only – check with Director of Student Life. Disseminate all information to parties involved with shared information


o

Coordinate applicant screening, interviewing and hiring for Desk and RA positions and assist with hiring for other Student Life positions. Follow all official UNT and governmental policies regarding interviewing and hiring of employees. Processes should be standardized and timely.


o

Work with Director of Student Life and Assistant Director of Student Life to plan and implement training for Pas, RAs, and the Desk staff in August and January. Present and/or facilitate a minimum of two exercises/training sessions during each training session (August and January).


o

Assess on-going training needs of individual Pas, RAs, TA, and Desk staff and plan and implement training as needed and update PA, RA and Desk manuals yearly. Solicit information from the staff listed to secure accurate training seminars. Schedule a minimum of one training session per year for each position listed in description


o

Establish working schedule for the RAs Attain class schedules from RAs during August and January training and assign desk and on-call shifts for the semester prior to the first day of class.


o

Oversee work schedule of the Desk staff and approve time-off requests Sign Desk staff time sheets in on time with fewer than two errors


o

Develop the Senior Mentors assigned to you Meet with each pair of mentors or each mentor individually several times a semester to provide feedback on the service the mentors are providing the wing and each student.


o

Provide on-going feedback to Pas, RAs, and Desk Staff Contact with staff should be regular and consistent. Accurate notes should be kept on each staff person and retained in a file.


o

Evaluate the performance of all the RAs twice a year and the Desk staff once a year All feedback must be recorded in writing and shared with the evaluated employee. Feedback must be development in purpose. Input on each employee should be solicited from a wide range of individuals that have interacted with the particular employee.


o

Plan, implement and participate in team-building activities and boost morale. In addition to retreat functions, plan two team building event for staff each year. Create or submit nominations for awards for fellow staff members.


o

Establish positive working relationships with TAMS staff. Following the chain of command. Taking concerns directly to the party involved. Voice all concerns to the appropriate person and level. Visit each department’s main office a minimum of four times a semester. Support decisions of other TAMS departments and directors.


o

Conduct disciplinary hearings for mid level policy violations and appeals for Judicial Board hearings. Clearly record disciplinary meetings and appeals.


o

Work with the Director of Student Life to update the TAMS Student handbook yearly Keep a running notebook on suggestions and improvements throughout the year on the TAMS Student Handbook and work cooperatively to edit this document.


o

Support the programming performed by each RA, House and the student groups. Attend at least 1 program sponsored by each of the 6 Houses each semester. Attend at least 2 major programs sponsored by the student groups each semester. Provide supervision as needed at programs.


o

Advise student organizations developing the officers representing those organizations and programs. Attend the executive officer meetings of the organizations of which you have been assigned, assist the group in setting goals, and monitor the progress toward those goals. Utilize the bi-weekly House Meeting to give advising pointers to PAs. Attend at least 1 executive board meeting of 4 PAs.


o

Assist in planning major Student Life Events, Fall and Summer Orientation Take a leadership role in planning 1 major Student Life event (e.g. Prom, Senior Day or Rosecutting/Student Life Awards Ceremony)


o

Make appropriate referrals to Counseling staff and Academic staff and resolve roommate conflicts as needed Keep written records of all referrals and inform the Director of Student Life of all major incidents.


o

Be current and up to date with the student body Get to know at least 75% of the residents in each class. Attend as many student organization programs as possible. Solicit and respond to student concerns. Coordinate mid-semester student progress reports.


o

Establish a positive rapport with students Eat several meals with students in the university cafeterias and/or engage with students in casual relaxed settings. Create or submit nominations for awards for students. Participate in community building activities with the student body.


o

Assign rooms for students, PAs, and RAs Collect Room Request forms and complete assignments by July 15th. Evaluate room arrangements throughout the year and make changes when needed.


o

Manage aspects of maintenance and operations concerning McConnell Hall. (Building) Serve as the building representative. Track on-going maintenance concerns and work orders. Recommend and coordinate renovation projects. Serve as liaison with custodial staff and Housing Director of M&O. Supervise RA assigned to do routine maintenance tasks. Oversee RA completion of routine safety checks of rooms.


o

Maintain each RA Programming budget Oversee expenditures of RA and House programming funds.


o

Maintain employment records for PAs and RAs Keep all records on hand the legal amount of time and standardize all procedures with proper procedures of the UNT employment offices.


o

Organize reports of the activities throughout the year Write a yearly report at the end of the spring semester detailing all activities in the hall.


o

Act in accordance with established emergency protocol Serve as Hall Director on Call when scheduled. Respond to all emergency situations within a reasonable time frame. Oversee safety and security measures (locking of doors and alarm system). Conduct a fire and tornado drill each semester.


o

Interact appropriately with all parents. Notify parents about staff concerns about individual students giving a good public appearance about TAMS. No more than two complaints by parents by semester.


o

Deliver good service to other departments in the Academy Assist all offices of TAMS with traditional TAMS events- recruitment, interviewing, and special events. Assist Academic office and Counseling office with students at risk. Assist the UNT Housing office with RA Selection and other projects and committees.


o

Continue with professional development Continue with further educational needs. Share insights gained from classes or conferences with other staff. Participate in professional development opportunities.
