The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) is looking for an experienced Producer to join the Community Engagement Department.

The Community Engagement (CE) Department plays an integral part in NJPAC’s culture. CE successfully develops and maintains partnerships with community leaders to advance the performing arts, literacy, wellness, and cultural events presented by NJPAC. This is achieved by implementing the community-first approach, offering programs that meet the needs of targeted communities and engaged partners.

CE collaborates with local arts leaders and meets with NJPAC’s programming and Arts Education Department, along with its six Advisory Councils (the elders, dance, faith-based, jazz, Latino, and LGBTQIA) to plan in-person and virtual culturally vibrant programs that help us continually offer equitable and inclusive access to the arts.

The Producer – Community HUBs will steward relationships with community partner organizations, particularly the leaders of organizations and artists that will be featured at each venue. This individual acts as a year-round liaison between community partners and NJPAC, and oversees a portfolio of current and alumni engaged partner organizations. In addition, the manager will research and maintain database profiles on prospective partner organizations in that neighborhood to build a network of support for each venue.

The manager will oversee the development of community programs, collaborating on the design, marketing and oversight of all events at Community Hubs and other CE activities. They will coordinate and communicate with contributing community partners and be responsible for the recruitment, screening, hiring, and supervision of all local artists.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Builds and maintains relationships year-round with all current community partner organizations, with a specific focus on the leadership of these organizations.
  • Maintains a portfolio of current and alumni partner organizations, keeping contacts, history, and agreements up-to-date and organized.
  • Works closely with the Assistant Vice President of Community Engagement to scout, vet and onboard future community partner organizations to innovate and develop new programming.
  • Ensures the production of all NJPAC events in the Community Hub space, collaborating with Director and teaching artists on performances and programs, handling schedules, recruitment, and logistics with all partner leaders; supporting local artists.
  • Works with Venue partner and Community Engagement Coordinator to organize and successfully execute monthly or bi-monthly community activities at each Community Hub.
  • Oversees core elements of the programming process, such as the creation of agenda, run of show, production sheets, and the purchase of production equipment.
  • Coordinates and schedules all Community HUBs artist interviews, showings and performances.
  • Collaborates with NJPAC’s Arts Education Department on events and programming that focus on arts integration, professional development and in-community teaching residencies.
  • Maintain budgets for produced events.
  • Schedules necessary staff and volunteers for produced events.
  • Leads marketing and promotion of community partner performances and events to reach targeted markets. Guides the design and preparation of community collateral pieces (collateral, flyers, e-blasts, social posts, three sheets and PowerPoint slideshows, etc.).
  • Attends all major NJPAC programming and represents Community Hubs at community events.
  • Manages the overall Community Hubs budget that includes paying artists and production fees promptly.
  • Manages the Community Coordinator, production assistants, volunteers, seasonal interns and fellows as needed.
  • Work closely with the NJPAC staff including, operations, house management, programming, ticket services and security to execute on-site events
  • Submits bi-weekly updates on Community Hubs for interdepartmental and grant reporting, quarterly Board reports, Executive Committee and Board meetings.
  • Works with the Development Department to help build support for the Community Hubs, by providing monthly summaries and quarterly detailed reports to evaluate and measure qualitative and quantitative results.
  • Assist as Producer of Community Engagement activities beyond those specific to HUBs as directed.
  • Other duties as directed.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will have:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a community-based arts program, with some dance, music or theater experience.
  • Experience working within culturally diverse areas and experience levels
  • Strong management skills
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Adept at building collaborative relationships with a diverse array of people
  • A sincere interest in and/or experience with community-based arts
  • Affable and calm within a fast-paced and changeable environment
  • Fluent in Spanish or Mandarin is a plus.
  • Frequent availability in the evenings and weekends is required

  • Detail-oriented and organized, with the strong ability to successfully multitask as necessary or requested.
  • Experience with creating and implementing multiple programs with community partners and artists of all disciplines.
  • Lead multiple long- and short-term projects simultaneously, meeting all related deadlines with the ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and manage own work.
  • Ability to inspire, train, motivate and supervise staff members and volunteers.
  • Mission-minded with a strong interest in the performing arts.
