Title: Community Engagement Specialist

Primary Location: Rochester Center
Position Reports to: Assistant Executive Director

As the Community Engagement Specialist, you will be responsible for all peer support programs and AYA membership in Syracuse as well as community outreach in both Rochester and Syracuse. The primary responsibility of this position is to advance the organization’s mission: Helping adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer live their very best lives – today!

What You Will Do

Syracuse Programs

• Develop and facilitate engaging SYR peer-support programs (in-person, virtual) to help AYAs cope with the psychosocial impact of cancer across the continuum (diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, end of life)
• Work collaboratively with the AYA Specialist to accurately assess needs and develop relevant programming content
• Manage Syracuse program, scheduling, inquiries, inventory
• Enter all program and membership data and relevant contact information into main data base

Syracuse AYA Membership

• Coordinate with the AYA Specialist and SYR hospital staff to meet AYAs during in-patient and clinic visits
• Grow Syracuse membership by establishing and maintaining trusting relationship with new and existing AYA members and families through calls, texts, social media, etc.
• Maintain the confidentiality of all AYA members
• Develop an effective strategy to ensure 13thirty membership is all inclusive

Rochester & Syracuse Outreach

• Develop and implement a robust outreach plan to ROC & SYR school districts and universities, as well as SYR community groups to heighten awareness of 13thirty Cancer Connect as a community resource
• Stay abreast of AYA oncology issues through relevant reading, inter/intra-organization relationships

Goin’ Bald for Bucks

• Coordinate and implement Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center’s year-round Bald for Bucks program with ROC schools, individuals and corporations

Other

• Assist the Events & Marketing Manager and Program Manager as needed

• Be a consistent support for AYAs and families with excellent listening skills, genuine compassion and abundant enthusiasm
• Create a motivating and productive work environment with a positive attitude and open-mindedness
• Support all organizational efforts with a “can-do” attitude and willingness to go “above and beyond” when necessary
• Manage multiple, and sometimes changing, priorities with effective planning and organizational skills
• Help achieve organizational goals with strong initiative and creative problem-solving skills
• Uphold and contribute to the established culture with firm belief in and adherence to organizational values

Required

• Evening and weekend scheduling as programming dictates
• Travel to Syracuse one to two days per week for scheduled AYA programs and community events

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in human services, instructional design, or related field
• Experience in cancer-related area and group facilitation
• Proficiency using a MAC computer and desktop publishing tools

Pay: $32,000.00 - $42,000.00 per year
