Ensure safety and security in the confinement facility. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: answering phones; visually observing inmates, deputies and the public through closed circuit television; conversing with inmates and the public over an intercom system; operate controls for electronic doors and gates to control the movement of the public, inmates and deputies; using a computer, logs the activities of the deputies and inmates within the facility; operates a two-way radio
Pay range - $22.28 - $26.72/hr DOQ

APPLICANTS MUST PROVIDE REFERENCES

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Maintain the security of the jail by ensuring that all inmates are adequately confined.
  • Monitor the safety of inmates, detainees, visitors and employees.
  • Maintain facility security visually and through monitoring surveillance cameras to include inspect all cellblocks, kitchen, laundry, recreation areas, library and courts through closed circuit television and intercom to ensure security.
  • Monitor and document movement of inmates throughout the facility.
  • Control the movement of inmates, the public and employees through electronic doors and gates.
  • Log all information regarding inmates and employees on a constant basis, to accurately reflect their activity.
  • Maintain efficient recording keeping for the jail. Document all pertinent information received.
  • Using jail management system, obtain information about inmates and forward to courts, and other agencies as appropriate.
  • Answer incoming phone calls directed to the facility and forward to the appropriate destination.
  • Advise deputies or appropriate personnel of visitation, recreation, lawyer consultations, special needs consultants, and other situations of similar interest.
  • Update information in Jail Management system pertaining to inmates.
  • Distribute information of importance utilizing electronic mail.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

High School diploma or equivalent

AGE:

Minimum 18 years of age

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Requires a level of knowledge and ability to independently accomplish tasks or projects of typical complexity in a consistent and accurate manner and in a variety of situations. An essential aspect of this level is the creativity and innovation required to enhance the mere application of skill.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Must have basic typing skills. Must be proficient in record keeping. Must have mastery-level skills in communications and in handling stressful situations. Must know how to administer first-aid and CPR.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be in good health and good physical condition. Must have vision of 20-40 or better using both eyes, with eyeglasses or contact lenses if required. Must be able to sit for long periods of time. Must be able to watch monitors for long periods of time. Must be able to operate two-way radios, computers, intercoms, and phones.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Spends 90% of the time sitting and 10% of the time standing or walking while working in the Control room or Booking area.

Frequently pushes, pulls, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, reaches, and handles in the daily performance of duty.

Oral and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication as well as communication through automated devices such as the two way radio, intercom system and telephone.

Visual and fine/gross motor skills enabling the use of office equipment.

Visual capacity including color vision to monitor movement within and around the facility utilizing close circuit monitors.

Visual and fine/gross motor skills enabling the operation of control panels within the facility.

Ability to detect criminal/hazardous situations.

PHYSICAL DEMAND DEFINITIONS:

Occasionally: Activity exists less than 1/3 of the time.

Frequently: Activity exists between 1/3 and 2/3 of the time.

Constantly: Activity exists more than 2/3 of the time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a closed environment, with no direct contact with inmates. There is the possibility of fires and disturbances , which may be threatening to life or cause bodily harm. Extremely stressful environment during peak activity periods demanding full attention and coordination of numerous tasks simultaneously. Is assigned to work schedules requiring rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.

POSSIBLE HEALTH RISKS SPECIFIC TO THIS POSITION:

This position has been determined to be an EXTREME exposure risk to “biohazards” associated with blood-borne pathogens HIV (aids), HAV (Hepatitis A) virus, HBV (hepatitis B) virus, and air-borne transmissions of TB (tuberculosis). Members are advised that exposure to a “biohazard” may result in severe illness or death. Members are required by Department policy to use protective equipment and clothing. Inoculation may be required to prevent or treat exposures to “biohazards”. The County provides inoculation of HAV, HBV, (Testing for TB) Chickenpox, Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria, & Pertussis), Meningococcal, MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella), and Influenza. Some vaccinations are only required once in a life time, and you may be required to show documentation of the vaccine. Employees who decline to be vaccinated will need to sign a Declination
