HIRING FOR COOK

Position: Cook

Locations: Santa Fe Sprints, South Gate, Whittier

Salary: $18 - $21 per hour (Depending on education, experience, skillset and hiring site)

Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Director, the cook is responsible for preparing food, training the kitchen crew, maintaining health standards, and purchasing supplies for the daily meals.

Essential Job Functions:

· Oversee food preparation, cleanliness, and adherence to health codes and regulatory guidelines for Residential Multiservice Center.

· Conduct menu planning that meets nutritional standards consistent with CDCR regulations, policy, and procedures.

· Prepare meals for the population housed at the facility.

· Ensure all meals are prepared in accordance with approved menus, that meals are served on time, and keep track of number of meals served to staff and residents; keep culinary records.

· Tests all food prior to serving and retain a sample of each meal for 24 hours to determine possible food contamination.

· Purchase and properly store food and maintain sufficient supplies to avoid food shortages.

· Incorporate planning, food budgeting, shopping and preparation of meals as part of the life skills curriculum for the clients.

· Supervise participants assigned to work in the kitchen.

· Maintain high health standards including cleanliness, sanitation, and wearing of hairnets and/or caps and gloves at all times in food preparation and serving areas.

· Ensure that equipment is in good operating condition and that temperatures are within proper standards, be constantly aware of fire and safety hazards and report repair/maintenance needs to Facility Manager and Building Maintenance Specialist.

· Be familiar with State of California / Los Angeles County Health Codes relating to the operations of a commercial kitchen and ensure compliance at all times.

· Label, date and store all left-over food in accordance with sanitary food handling requirements.

· Maintain professional standards at all times with food preparation and handling, as well as maintaining a high level of good housekeeping.

· Follow procedures for dispensing, retrieving, and counting all eating and cooking utensils during and after meal periods.

· Receive and properly store all deliveries, maintain current inventory on all commodities and stored goods.

· Ability to be sensitive to trauma and gender while interacting with clients.

· Must follow safety rules and be familiar with IIPP (Injury and Illness Prevention Program).

Qualifications:

· Must be at least twenty-one years of age;

· One year’s experience as a professional cook in an institution preparing meals for large groups;

· Ability to follow current guidelines on nutrition and create updated menus;

· Ability to work well in a team environment;

· Experience working with a female population is preferred;

· Strong computer skills, to support menu creation and email;

· Maintain mandated training requirements for position;

· Valid California Driver’s License or Identification and proof of personal auto insurance is required. Hire is contingent upon agency insurability;

· Bilingual English/Spanish optional.

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED)

Must be able to pass the following pre-employment screenings:

Additionally, L.A. CADA offers HIV / AIDS prevention and intervention services, including HIV testing.
