This position is based out of Canine Detection Unit located in VADOC Headquarters in Richmond, Virginia.

Supports the organizational objective to enhance public safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Department of Corrections (VADOC) staff and offenders by meeting re-entry objectives and by providing effective security, programming, custody and control of adult offenders by providing effective basic, maintenance and proficiency training for all of VADOC detection, bloodhound, and patrol canine teams as well as proven interdiction methods to stem the flow of contraband on properties owned and/or operated by the Department of Corrections, and proven track/search methods to locate missing persons, to apprehend escapees and absconded felons while providing valuable support to Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies.

As a Operations Training Sergeant, this position provides canine training for Virginia Department of Corrections’ Canine Unit to include conducting basic and advance canine training for DOC Canine Officers as mandated by State/Federal law in accordance with standards established by the Department of Criminal Justice Services. Directly responsible for assisting in the reporting, documenting, scheduling, development of and delivery of mandated training for all canine units at facilities and in the field to ensure that Department of Corrections, Department of Criminal Justice Services, and American Correctional Associations standards are maintained. Supervise and assist in the field training and conduct routine field assessments of Detection Canine Officers and provide first line supervision to Administrative Staff and Basic Correctional Officer Canine. Leads and counsels staff. Provide support and assistance to the Statewide Canine Coordinator with the performance management duties of the Canine Corrections Officers ensuring time, attendance and leave balances are accurate and maintained in accordance to policy.

Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver’s License. Current DCJS Corrections Officer Certification required. Experience as a DOC Canine Handler required. DCJS General Instructor Certification required. Working knowledge of Department of Corrections’ policies and procedures. Demonstrated ability to properly communicate, train and handle canines. Acquired and proficient skills in training, leadership, instruction of students and dogs of different skills and levels of learning abilities. Working knowledge of the standard methods of evidence gathering, seizure and control. Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies/procedures. Proficient computer skills and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.

The selected candidate must demonstrate the willingness and physical ability to work all posts and shifts as assigned. Demonstrated skills in report writing and using proper grammar. Demonstrated ability to evaluate new and changing methods of detection. Ability to recognize the behavioral traits that are problematic and how to resolve (identifies the interim and terminal performance objectives).

Preferred Qualifications
Prefer K-9 Certification. Prefer K-9 Adjunct Instructor.
