Skills and Experience:
The cost engineer must have a complete understanding of the resources available. This includes understanding the viability of these resources (people, materials, budgets, time) and how these resources will be used. The construction project plan should include a clear analysis of what is needed for the project to succeed, what could cause the project to fail, and detailed checks and balances used through-out the project to keep it on track and budget. Cost engineer keeps all the pieces of the project working and fitting together through planning, scheduling, management, and review of the construction project from start-to-finish.
Requirements:
- Strong leadership skills
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills
- Strong prioritization and organizational skills; detail-oriented
- Strong working knowledge of programs such as Primavera (P6), Excel and Word
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Effective negotiation and contract management skills to represent the company with the Owner
- Well-rounded base of knowledge in construction disciplines
Essential Job Duties:
- Feasibility studies
- Studies construction plans
- Identify costs and sets an overall budget
- Create project benchmarks
- Plan costs to help the team stay on-track
- Communicate with construction team through-out the project
- Review and assesses project timelines
- Resolve scope creep and any other project slow downs
- Assess the project upon completion for areas of improvement
