Job description
The purpose of this position is to implement a comprehensive school counseling program for all assigned students. Responsibilities will be to provide direct and indirect services through classroom guidance, small group, and individual student supports and enhance skills for academic, social/emotional, and career development. Counselors will participate in transition activities between elementary, middle, and high school; assist in the identification and referral of students with the appropriate district personnel; assist in the coordination of referrals of families to special in-district and out-of-district services; and promote and communicate the counseling program of the district to students, staff, parents, and community. Other duties may include initiating parent, teacher, and student conferences involving student concerns; coordinating and participating in school-wide registration and course-selection, and academic student scheduling for individual students; participating in activities designed to implement the school’s mission and vision statement in accordance with established district policies and regulations; serving on a variety of school and district committees and work on special projects as assigned; serving as member of the counseling team of the school and district; and performing related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned.
- Master’s Degree/Certification in guidance and counseling or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work and to meet certification requirements.
- Valid Washington State certificate as a school counselor, ESA endorsement required and must be on file prior to beginning work.
- ELL endorsement.
- Knowledge of guidance and counseling principles, practices, and techniques.
- Knowledge of the concerns, problems, and issues important to students.
- Knowledge of rules, regulations, and polices pertaining to the counseling of students.
- Ability to communicate effectively and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to analyze and synthesize data.
- Ability to produce accurate records and reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, other employees, and others as needed.
- Ability to exhibit multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity with the ability to communicate effectively with all cultural groups in the school community.
- Experience working with secondary students.
- Experience working with a diverse student population and the specific school demographics
