Job description
Summary

The King County Sheriff's Office is located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. We are among the largest sheriff's departments in the country with a commissioned staff of more than 780. Our deputies have opportunities to serve in many different communities, including unincorporated King County, numerous city police departments, and a transit police agency, among others.

Court Marshals hold a limited law enforcement commission that allows them to perform law enforcement duties while on duty and at their worksite. This is a great opportunity for law enforcement professionals to let previous career experience enhance retirement earnings and/or continue a career of service.

Marshals serve at the following locations:

  • King County Courthouse, Seattle
  • Youth Services Center, Seattle
  • Harborview Mental Health Court, Seattle
  • Regional Justice Center, Kent
  • Meydenbauer Center, Bellevue
  • Other locations as assigned

Oral Board/Interview Process
Applications will be reviewed weekly and eligible candidates will be notified of upcoming dates for the oral board examination. Applications will be screened for accuracy and completeness to ensure you meet the minimum qualifications to be considered as a Marshal candidate. Civil Service reviews applications every week and will contact you within 5 to 7 business days of receiving your application. The oral board exam is a formal interview conducted over video conference with a panel of King County Court Protection Deputies and/or Sergeants. The panel will evaluate you on the following criteria: communication skills, background, community involvement, experience, integrity, motivation, interpersonal skills and problem solving.

Civil Service Eligibility List
Upon successfully passing the oral board examination, qualified candidates will be placed on the Marshal eligibility list. The final score is based on your oral board interview and, if applicable, one of the approved preference points (see below). Ranking on this list determines the order in which background investigations are conducted.

PREFERENCE POINTS
(candidates may not use more than one preference):
  • Veteran's Preference: a valid copy of your DD214 must be provided prior to or at the time of your oral board appointment to be valid. To learn more, review RCW 41.04.010
  • Foreign Language Proficiency: if you speak a foreign language and wish to receive additional consideration, please indicate this on the applicable supplemental question. You must successfully pass the pre-set requirements in an assessment before additional points are added.

Background Investigation
Our thorough background investigation includes a look at your criminal history record, employment history, personal references, driving history, credit history and an evaluation of psychological suitability. KCSO detectives will conduct the investigation, which may include a home visit. Personal references and current and previous employers will be contacted. Once the background investigation is complete, you will take a polygraph test.

Final Interview and Medical Exam
If you pass the background process, you will have a final interview with the hiring captain. Upon successful completion of that interview, you will get the call for a job offer contingent on passing a basic medical exam and psychological evaluation that confirms your fitness for duty.

Timeline

While some background investigations take longer than others and depending on your position on the eligibility list, you can expect the time from the point your background investigation begins to the time you are offered a job to take around eight weeks.
