Overview:

We are seeking a Senior Technician with a broad skill set which encompasses but is not limited to electro-mechanical ability, operation of electronic equipment, strong troubleshooting ability, and computer literacy. This position resides in the SNS Low-Temperature and Magnets Group in the Sample Environment and User Labs Section, Neutron Scattering Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


As part of this group, you will perform hands-on assembly, installation, testing, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of specialized low-temperature and magnet laboratory equipment used to conduct scientific experiments at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) facility and High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) facility. Such equipment includes cryogenic apparatus, vacuum systems, magnet systems, and other unique sample environments as required.


Special consideration will be given to candidates with previous experience in cryogenic sample environment systems, user support, programming, and/or electronics. The successful candidate will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and be comfortable interacting with a wide variety of coworkers, scientific staff, and external scientific experimental Users and supporting a safety-minded and operations-oriented culture among team members.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assembles, installs, troubleshoots, tests, maintains, repairs, and operates specialized laboratory equipment, including cryogenic apparatus, vacuum systems, magnet systems, various experimental platforms, and other unique sample environments as required.
  • Assists or leads the development of new designs, equipment control software, test procedures, and work plans.
  • Maintains an inventory of appropriate tools, bulk hardware, and spare parts.
  • Provides and assists in the documentation of low-temperature and magnet laboratory equipment including drawings, specifications, user manuals, operating procedures, wiring diagrams, process and instrumentation diagrams, and schematics to ensure system integrity and configuration control.
  • Ensures and promotes a safe, clean, and efficient work environment that complies with environmental, safety, health, and quality procedures and programs.
  • Ensures lab space and workspace meets or exceeds ORNL Safety Requirements (ES&H).
  • Provides a wide range of support to Users to facilitate their work in a 24-hour user facility, as necessary, with limited supervision.
  • Responds to User problems and issues, including being available when designated during off-hours and weekends.
  • Performs equipment lifts using overhead facility cranes and rigging activities.
  • Documentation of work performed.
  • Conducts facility walkthroughs while observing equipment operation, work practices, and work environments to help identify issues, problems, or improvements.
  • Reports potential non-compliances and takes positive actions to promote adherence to requirements.
  • Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of professional values and ethics.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in a scientific or technical discipline and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience. A HS diploma with a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Must be able to perform hands-on work to troubleshoot, diagnose, and debug technical equipment and systems.
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies in a timely manner and utilize sound judgement in their reconciliation.
  • Candidates must be able to perform moderately physically demanding tasks, such as frequently climbing stairs, walking throughout a large facility, and occasionally lifting items weighing up to 30 pounds.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with CAD programs, data acquisition and control software
  • Good interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
