JOB DESCRIPTION: Custodian – 2nd SHIFT FLOATER DISTRICT WIDE

The Board-designated position of floating custodian will be available to be assigned to fill in for any absent custodian, or head custodian at any school. The Director of Facilities or his/her designee will assign the duties and shift schedule for each such position. In the event that there is no absent custodian, the Director of Facilities or his/her designee, will assign other appropriate duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED.

Knowledge of proper cleaning practices/procedures in an educational environment.

Ability to follow both oral and written directions from supervisor with a minimum of supervision.

Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow custodians, supervisors, and other school employees.

Ability to meet the public and cooperate with various groups using the building for meetings, etc.

Be able to lift various reasonable heavy objects for weight and size, climb ladders and generally perform tasks that involve moderately strenuous work.

Must have strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator

Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job

Ability to work cooperatively with other maintenance and custodial employees, supervisors, teachers and other personnel

Physically and mentally able to lift reasonable loads, climb ladders and whatever tools may be required to perform the responsibilities of the position

Possess a valid Connecticut State Driver’s License and have a clean driving record

REPORTS TO:

Head Custodian and building administrator

JOB GOAL:

To maintain a clean, heathy and safe environment for students, staff, and the general public.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conforms to all Board policies and regulations.

Keeps building and premises, including but not limited to, all sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean at all times.

Performs cleaning tasks including but not limit to: cleaning and/or sanitizing, sweeping, dusting, dry mopping, wet mopping, vacuuming, removing graffiti, waxing, scrubbing, stripping, polishing, window cleaning, trash removal and all other related functions as directed.

Performs all outdoor tasks including but not limited to snow and ice removal, and mowing, trimming, edging, leaf raking, sweeping/cleaning parking lots and playgrounds, keep grounds free of litter, debris and graffiti.

Sanitize restrooms.

Assists with building operation for building use and events, including set-up and breakdown of chairs, tables, podiums and other equipment, cleaning up, locking/unlocking areas for access and supporting individuals using building areas.

May perform building and site safety and operational checks, including inspecting for hazards graffiti and vandalism. Respond to fire alarms and burglar alarms, Report findings to supervisor

Maintains and marks athletic fields.

Performs interior and exterior painting.

Receives oral and written instructions.

Maintains custodial closets and storerooms.

Performs minor maintenance tasks such as changing lamps, ceiling tiles, and various repair tasks.

Promptly reports building deficiencies, issues, and in-depth required repairs to the Head Custodian.

Perform season, summer and project cleaning as planned and assigned by supervisor.

Reports any damage to school property immediately to Head Custodian.

Works cooperatively with other employees of the school district and Town of Windham as assigned.

Maintains a polite and helpful attitude when dealing with students, school employees and the public.

Performs work in a safe manner and observes all safety procedures.

Uses all tools, equipment and materials responsibly and performs basic inspection of them prior to use.

Uses computer and/or smart phone for work orders.

Assumes such other functions as directed by the Director of Facilities.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Twelve-month position, forty (40) hours a week, Holidays and vacations, fringe benefits and salary based on the Teamsters Union Local 493.

Physical Demands: Very Heavy

Working Conditions: Both inside and outside. Extremes of cold + temperature changes. Extremes of heat + temperature changes. Wet and humid. Noise and vibration. Vapors, fumes, odors. Dust, limited ventilation. Toxic substances.

EVALUATION:

Performance of the responsibilities as described and assigned will be evaluated by the Director of Facilities.
