General Responsibilities
The Custodian will perform routine floor care such as sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing, buffing, vacuuming and shampooing carpet areas per housekeeping services. He/she will do general cleaning in the building and office areas. He/she will perform daily bathroom care, cleaning and disinfecting all surfaces and keep all dispensers clean and full. Assist with ordering supplies. Will be responsible for maintaining all school cleaning supplies in good working order.
This position supports Melmark New England’s mission to serve children, adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders, acquired brain injury, neurological diseases and disorders, comorbid mental health disorders and severe challenging behaviors. It is required that employees demonstrate their understanding of that service mission through their work behavior and commitment to the students and the staff who are directly involved in the delivery of that service.
All staff are expected to adhere to Melmark’s Code of Conduct and Standards of Professionalism included in the Employee Handbook. It is the responsibility of each staff member to read and familiarize themselves with the contents of the Employee Handbook and ask questions relative to the application of these standards in the workplace if unclear to the employee.
Essential Functions
Reports on duty at assigned time; reports absence as far in advance as possible, but in no case later than normal reporting time.
If resigning from the position, all positions require a minimum of four weeks’ notice. Management positions are required to give additional time dependent on the size and scope of the position but six weeks would be considered minimum. Melmark New England retains the right to refuse professional reference except as legally required to those employees who do not give proper notice.
Rotates schedule, including assistance on weekends and holiday per request from direct supervisor. The Custodian may be required to cover in the school/residential program or alternative sites as based on the needs of the program and/or environmental emergencies.
At the start of each day, do a review of the cleaning company’s performance from the previous evening. Document findings on cleaning checklist.
Do a walkthrough of entire building, cleaning up any debris, mopping any spills, cleaning dirty windows, changing trash can liners, stocking all bathrooms, and reporting anything out of the ordinary to Maintenance Supervisor or Business Director. The maintenance department has a checklist (see below for task summary) that is to be referenced during the walk through to assess areas of concern other than those listed herein. This walk through should be performed at least twice each day, once at the start of the day, and once after lunch (bathroom stocking and cleaning to occur more frequently, checking throughout the entire day)
Custodian Checklist Summary
a. Replaces lightbulbs as needed
b. Cleans and stocks bathrooms, including toilet paper, paper towels, soap.
c. Replaces trash can liners as needed.
d. Sweeps and mops floors as needed
e. Cleans windows
f. Picks up trash and debris throughout building and outside grounds.
g. Assists lunch staff with cafeteria cleanup
h. Receives and breaks down deliveries
i. Keeps staff break room clean and organized
j. Keeps building clear of all tripping and slipping hazards
k. Checks windows and doors at end of day to make sure all are securely closed.
l. Checks thermostats to make sure set at night setting at end of day
6. Does a walk through of the school grounds, picking up any debris and reporting any areas of concern as referenced in the above custodian checklist. This should be done at least twice each day: Once in the morning and once after lunch.
7. Performs maintenance functions as required. These projects include but are not limited to such items as reinforcing desks and chairs, hanging corkboards and any other tasks as assigned by the maintenance manager.
8. Assists with receiving deliveries. Ensures that all items are accounted for as per the packing slip. Delivers items to appropriate storage room or person. Unpacks boxed orders as needed. Breaks down and disposes of empty boxes.
9. On snow days, custodian is to arrive no later than 6:30 a.m. to begin shoveling, salting, sanding, and plowing as needed to ensure safe passageway throughout the school and school grounds.
10. Assists direct care staff with any student accidents (e.g., vomit, spills, etc.).
11. Maintains storage areas and keeps them secured. Keeps cleaning supplies and equipment in a safe and orderly state.
12. Maintains landscaping as needed.
13. Meets regularly with in-house student job crew and coordinates tasks.
14. General Support: The administrative and support staff of Melmark New England all support the operations of the program. Sometimes this will require action that is unique to a given day and can involve “whatever it takes.” Thus, while the above is a listing of primary responsibilities, administrative and support staff will have “other duties that may be assigned” in support of and for the good of Melmark New England.
Basic Qualifications
Education/Training: High School Diploma or G.E.D.; trade school preferred.
Certifications/Licensure: A valid US driver’s license and a minimum age of twenty-one (21) years old. Must be capable of attaining approved Melmark driver status. Must meet Massachusetts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) background check requirements. Successful completion of employer provided certification in CPR, First Aid, and Melmark’s Orientation Program and New Hire Onsite training program.
Skill(s): General skill with using tools (e.g., power drill, circular saw, hammer, etc.).
Experience: Minimum of six (6) months of experience in janitorial or industrial capacity.
Schedule: 20 hours per week- 8:00 am - 12:00pm or 12:00pm to 4:00pm
Interrelationships: Interacts with all Melmark New England departments to provide smooth transition between day and residential needs of Melmark New England individuals.

Pay: $23.00 - $25.00 per hour
