Job Summary
The Data Visualization designer designs dashboards on a small, collaborative analytics team serving medical education. This role, emphasizing knowledge in visual design, will engage directly with subject matter experts, end users, and technical teammates to build elegant user-friendly data visualizations. Defining metrics and KPIs and stepping through technical deployments, this role champions the user experience in static and interactive reporting. The successful candidate will engage across the full development cycle (including defining requirements, coding, testing, deploying, documenting, and maintaining reports and dashboards across platforms.) The Visualization Designer will possess a full understanding of industry practices, standards, and procedures for business intelligence analytics projects.
In addition to the core role as a visualization designer, s/he will work in conjunction with team members to understand and prioritize business requirements and infrastructure needs for the ongoing success of the analytics team.

The School of Medicine (SOM), Technology Enhanced Education (TEE) Group directs, develops and supports a variety of technology services and systems to support the school’s education mission and critical and complex medical student education business process including admissions, advising, educational data and reporting, curriculum, evaluation, assessment, faculty development and online learning. TEE provides strategic technology leadership, business systems analysis and support, research and development, application development, data management and analytics and online learning and curriculum management solutions to support teaching and learning for approximately 700 medical students, more than 2000 teaching faculty and staff across all School of Medicine departments and clinical teaching sites throughout Northern California and across five major health systems. TEE provides technology consultation for graduate and continuing medical education as well as online learning and curriculum management technology services and systems to other health professions schools and education programs including the UCSF schools of dentistry, nursing and pharmacy, the UCSF Medical Center, and over 30 health professions schools across the world.
Required Qualifications
- BA or BS degree in Computer Science, CIS/MIS, Medical Informatics, or equivalent degree from an accredited four-year institution and 3+ years of relevant work experience and/or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience/training
- 3 - 5 years of experience with Microsoft SQL; stored procedures, queries, views
- Advanced skills associated with software design, modification, implementation and deployment, including analytical software such as Tableau and T-SQL
- Demonstrated experience and expertise in designing portals, reports, dashboards, and analytics with professional report building software packages. Proficient with report terminology and concepts including parameterization, aggregation, etc.
- Will have incidental access to confidential information. As such, employee is expected to adhere and abide to UCSF confidentiality agreements, policies and procedures
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree
- Extensive and facility using with relational databases such as MS SQL-Server, MySQL and/or AWS
- Microsoft Certified DBA (MCDBA) or Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) – Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance
- Thorough knowledge of business intelligence functions, analytics, industry standards and best practices
- Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs. Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans
- Demonstrated ability to write clear technical specifications, presentations, training materials, user & technical documentation. Provide effort estimates to develop proposals for projects
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization
- Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines
