Job Summary: The person will be responsible for assisting the Deaf resident to communicate his needs, wants, and thoughts with non-signing staff and other individuals. Position is based in group home in Penfield, Rochester working with a Deaf male resident.
Job Duties:
- Facilitates communication and language enhancement to assist the Deaf resident so he can communicate his needs, wants, and thoughts with non-signing staff and other individuals he may chose to communicate with.
- Promotes an environment where the Deaf resident feels a sense of inclusion and integration into the community.
- Facilitates and provides support to the Deaf resident and his chosen recreational activities, in order to promote independent participation and full integration and inclusion in the community.
- Completes shift reports and emails to supervisor at the completion of each shift.
- Brings concerns about work environment or the Deaf resident to the supervisor in a timely manner by email or other communication modes, separate from the daily shift reports.
- Works in cooperation with the DDSO state staff to ensure that the Deaf resident's needs and wants are met.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills:
- Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Possess basic understanding of individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Ability to facilitate communication between individuals with no knowledge of ASL and be able to translate the meaning of this communication to Deaf resident using Minimal Sign Language (MSL).
- Maintain yearly training given by DDSO / OPWDD.
- Ability to comprehend and communicate through written dialogue.
- Ability to be flexible and be able to handle unknown situations when they arise.
Person should have a valid Driver's License.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
