In support of the expansion and continued clinical growth of the University of New England’s Oral Health Center (OHC), the Dental Assistant works with the clinical faculty, dental students and other clinical support staff with a focus on chair side dental assisting and patient care support.

Responsibilities
  • Perform chairside dental assisting duties to include operatory set-up and breakdown using proper infection control protocols; comfortable and competent using electronic technology in collecting and recording patient health histories and dental charting; utilize appropriate patient communication and management.
  • Competent with instrument transfer, field isolation, and dental material handling for all general and specialty dental procedures performed by a general dentist.
  • Perform all procedures as allowed under the Maine Department of Professional Regulation, State Board of Dental Examiners, and Rules Relating to Dental Assistants.
  • Provide support during medical emergencies.
  • Provide patient care support by exposing digital diagnostic images and organizing and storing those images for use in the OHC electronic patient record system.
  • Understand and practice proper maintenance procedure for digital imaging equipment.
  • Work with appropriate individuals to implement and maintain the OHC’s infection control policies and procedures.
  • Support clinic operations, including monitoring, cleaning and disinfecting clinic operatories and support spaces; reporting of equipment failures; maintaining/recording logs related to instrument, material and equipment dispensing.
  • Support the administrative clinical staff, including answering phones, patient reception, electronic patient scheduling, electronic dental record review and maintenance, patient registration, and patient billing.
  • Exhibit a professional appearance and demeanor and support the educational mission of the clinical faculty, including role modeling and teaching students how to function as dental assistants on the dental team, both in four-handed chairside activities and in clinical operational support.
  • Prepare, sterilize and properly maintain dental instruments/supplies/equipment according to the manufacturer’s instructions in the OHC Central Sterilization area and Simulation Clinic Dispensary.
  • Organize, store and track electronic inventory of dental instruments, supplies and equipment in the OHC Central Sterilization, Dispensary and/or Simulation Clinic.
  • Dispense and maintain dental instruments, supplies and equipment in the OHC Dispensary and/or Simulation Clinic using scanning and computer technology.
  • Support the supply and instrument inventory control; quality assessment and maintenance of dental instruments; regular maintenance of clinical equipment as directed; maintenance of logs related to quality assurance and equipment operations, and instrument sterilization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned



Qualifications
Preferred candidate will be a Certified Dental Assistant recognized by the State of Maine, have a current dental radiographer’s license recognized by the State of Maine, and a minimum of three years experience as a dental assistant. Current Basic Life Support. Proficient in the operation of dental radiographic equipment and ability to learn to operate commercial size sterilization washers and sterilizers. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Effectively interact with health care professionals, students and patients in a fast-paced environment. Current knowledge of modern dental imaging technology. Experience with patient electronic health records, computers, printers, scanners, calculators, fax machines, copy machine and telephone operation.
