Court reporters carry out a variety of functions in the Criminal Division of the Circuit Court Clerk's Office including, but not limited to: regularly attending Court proceedings and assisting the presiding judge as needed; preparing case files and legal documents for use in criminal hearings; calling cases; administering oaths; arraigning defendants; recording and summarizing hearings; cataloging exhibits; issuing capiases for arrest; calculating court costs, fines, and fees; drafting and distributing court orders; inputting case data and dispositional information into an electronic case management system; preparing and submitting appellate criminal records to higher courts; assisting the public, attorneys probation officers, and other legal professionals with requests and /or questions about criminal matters.
Various other duties as assigned and/or at the discretion of the Clerk of Circuit Court.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); three or more years related experience, preferably in the legal field, two of which are at the level of Deputy Court Clerk I; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college, business school, or paralegal studies program preferred.

Examples of Duties

SUMMARY
Performs administrative and clerical tasks in the Office of the Clerk of Circuit Court.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Attend court hearings, proceedings, and sessions; assist the presiding judge as needed
Prepare case files for use in court hearings, proceedings, and sessions

Record and synopsize hearings

Arraign defendants

Administer oaths to jury members, witnesses, interpreters, and other individuals

Label exhibits and maintain exhibit logs

Input case file data and dispositional information into the Circuit Case Management System (CCMS)

Index and scan case documents into an automated indexing and retrieval system

Issue various legal documents such as capiases for arrest, witness subpoenas, and
Subpoena Duces Tecums

Prepare, process, and distribute court orders

Prepare and submit appellate records to the Court of Appeals and/or the Supreme Court of Virginia

Assist the public, legal professionals, and other government agencies with requests and/or questions in person, by phone, via email or mail

Issue restricted licenses to parties that are eligible through the Department of Motor Vehicles

File search warrants and maintain an index for such

Record and collect fines, fees, and bonds

Other duties based on office need and/or as assigned at the discretion of the Clerk of Circuit Court

Supplemental Information

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $31,760.40 - $50,186.75 per year
