The Star Tribune, a Pulitzer Prize-winning, locally owned newsroom, is seeking a talented visual journalist for our award-winning design team. This person will design pages across a range of sections with a primary focus on news design. The ideal candidate should have a robust portfolio and experience working on daily deadlines. We are looking for a highly organized journalist who can work closely with design directors, editors and team leaders to produce impactful visual solutions for multiple platforms. This designer will be counted on for planning and executing anything from high-profile covers, special packages and daily sections to detailed inside pages and social promotion of our content. The designer will contribute to a collaborative, team-based and feedback-centric environment. This person must excel at seeing new, accessible ways to present information and tell stories, and should embrace working in an environment in which rigorous editing for visuals and content is the norm. We strongly believe that good content drives design and that design can elevate the readers’ experience of engaging with that content.

QUALIFICATIONS

• A proven visual communicator and collaborator with at least four years of design experience.
• Able to demonstrate experience with mastering print page design, typography and the layering of information to attract readers of various interest levels.
• An efficient manager of several project timelines at once — both in planning and execution — without sacrificing small details or large ambition.
• Able to work closely with picture editors and content editors to find a perfect marriage of visuals and words.
• A strong familiarity with design tools including Adobe's InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.

Pay for this position ranges from $68,000 to $77,800 a year, depending on experience. Wages are noted in the contract of Star Tribune and the Minnesota Newspaper and Communications Guild.
