The Town of Granite Falls is seeking community-oriented professionals with strong initiative and sound judgement to serve as our next Detective. Granite Falls, (approximate population 5,000) is located in the western piedmont area of Western North Carolina and is part of the Hickory Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), the sixth largest MSA in the state. Granite Falls is located approximately 40 miles southeast of Boone, 65 miles northwest of Charlotte, and 70 miles east of Asheville, and is the southernmost municipality in Caldwell County, bordering Lake Hickory and Lake Rhodhiss on the southern and western sides of town, respectively. Major transportation routes serving the Town include US 321 and US 321A, which run north and south through the Town and Interstate 40 located approximately 5 miles south in the City of Hickory. The Town has a council-manager form of government, consisting of a mayor and six councilmembers, each elected on a non-partisan basis to serve staggered four-year-terms. The Town provides a full range of municipal services with a current budget of $16.6 million. The Fiscal Year 2022-2023 budget includes a total General Fund budget of $6.7 million, Water/Sewer Fund Budget of $2.7 million, and Electric Fund budget of $7.2 million.
The Detective serves as an investigator and carries a criminal caseload in the Police Department and may also participate in regular patrol activities. Investigative duties include conducting preliminary and supplementary criminal investigations; interviewing victims, complainants, witnesses, informants, and suspects; securing and investigating the crime scene; identifying, collecting, and preserving physical evidence; preparing reports; and testifying in court. Work involves general and major criminal, and narcotics investigations; and requires the application of modern investigative techniques, sound judgement, and independent initiative in pursuit of work objectives. Work involves frequent public contact which requires tact, firmness, and decisiveness. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy, State, and Federal laws, supplemented with specific directions from superior officers. The position is considered a safety sensitive role. Duties may expose the employee to human body fluids and subjects the work to OSHA bloodborne pathogen rules and regulations and may require one to work in close quarters. Work is performed under the supervision of the Detective Sergeant and is evaluated through observation, review of reports, and discussion of case management.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Graduation from an accredited two-year college or university with a degree in criminal justice and possession of a Basic Law Enforcement Certification with demonstrated criminal investigative ability and completion of schools and training in investigative specialties; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record is required.
Compensation and Benefits:
The Town of Granite Falls offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The starting pay for this position is $52,487.50, which includes a base salary of $49,400.00 and stand-by pay totaling $3,087.50. The Town provides a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, and life insurance; Local Government Employees Retirement System (LGERS) contribution and 5% 401(k) employer contribution; annual vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays. Additional benefits include bereavement and parental leave, education reimbursement, and longevity pay.
