Digital Communications Specialist
Are you a master Storyteller who is passionate about bringing stories to life?

The City of Grand Junction is seeking a Digital Communications Specialist who can channel their passion, and creativity for sharing stories through outstanding writing, video production and editing, and multimedia experience to help bring our content to life.

Reporting to the Director, you will be an integral member of the Communications and Engagement Department. You will play a critical role in bringing City of Grand Junction stories to life online using social media and city websites. Most importantly, you will help ensure our narrative is authentic and celebrates our successes and our community. Ideally, the candidate will have journalism/communications experience with a track record of creating compelling, human-centered storytelling in new and innovative ways.

About the Communications Department
The Communications and Engagement Department provides strategic communications to inform, consult, involve, collaborate, and empower internal and external stakeholders, including community members. The department manages media relations and communications channels including City websites and social media accounts.

Duties

What You’ll Do:
  • Create and schedule content for the City’s social media accounts; post multiple times daily and/or weekly including videos and graphics; post content consistent with the City’s brand, standards, and processes; develop and advocate best practices; respond in a timely manner to comments and direct messages on City social media sites.
  • Plan, create, optimize, and implement new and existing websites and/or functionality modules and update website specifications.
  • Perform daily site maintenance of the website to maintain content for accuracy and enforce defined web standards and specifications; monitor, interpret, and apply requirements and best practices of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Ensure consistency of electronic content with document retention policies, style guides, best practices, and City and/or department policies and procedures; provide training to staff related to City website content and publishing policies and procedures.
  • Prepare reports for supervisors, management, and City Council on social media trends, website statistics, and usability utilizing analytics and other website monitoring tools.
  • Inform, educate, and engage the community via digital platforms on City initiatives, programs, and special events.
  • Take photographs and video and create graphics for use in a broad variety of outreach communications designed to increase community engagement on social media and the website.

Qualifications

What We’re Looking For:
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, business or public administration, journalism, or related field.
  • Three years’ experience in communications, public relations, and marketing experience or other related field.
  • 3 - 5 of years relevant experience telling compelling stories.
  • Proven track record of creating compelling, human-centered storytelling content in new and innovative ways.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates effective storytelling, and experience with multimedia.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit with a strong collaborative mindset; able to both self-start and work with others to create outstanding content.
  • Keen ability to thrive in a dynamic; fast paced environment managing multiple deadlines to produce engaging content.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
