Administration & Finance has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Director of Business Operations position.

Nature of Work

This position will ensure that compliance with the University, state, federal and departmental policies and procedures are being met. Provide day-to-day operation management of staff, lead various teams and groups for projects as assigned. Serve as the liaison to the Finance, Budget and Human Resource offices and coordinate processes and procedures. Streamline and redefine processes to improve operations.

The position exercises initiative to achieve organizational goals and objectives, maintains confidentiality, and establishes and maintains positive working relationships. This position acts as an influencer in certain circumstances to ensure departments are adhering to all necessary policies, procedures, rules and regulations. This individual represents ASA&CSA communicating effectively in person and through written and verbal communication. Must possess a broad knowledge of CU organizational operations and policy, and a high level of experience, discretion, analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Direct reports may include the Purchasing Manager, Compliance Coordinator, Contracts/Purchasing Specialist, and the Coordinator of Purchasing and Department services.

Responsibilities

  • This position manages the Academic & Student Services and Central Services & Administration (ASA & CSA) daily operations, which includes oversight and management of procurement, expenses, travel, and associated contracts.
  • In addition, this position will help lead and assist all department financial, accounting, budget, payroll, and camp operationsThe Director of Business Operations will have a broad range of responsibilities for developing, recommending, implementing, and monitoring policies and procedures, internal controls, financial and management reports, cost efficiencies, and operational efficiencies for the ASA & CSA.
  • The director will ensure that the Department’s fiscal, operational, and personnel practices follow all relevant Federal, State, University, and affiliate organization policies and Procedures.
  • This position will lead the Business Office’s efforts to optimize internal processes as they relate to procurement, expenses, and travel reports. This includes continually identifying opportunities for process improvement and identifying and developing technological tools. This includes proactive communication with staff, University partners, and vendors, as well as perform continual reviews and improvements to the Business Office’s internal policies and procedures.
  • This position will also review and approve, or delegate approval, when necessary, for travel reports, expense reports, and other invoices and review contracts and identify spending patterns to assist in long- and short-term budget planning.
  • The Director will provide education and training across the schools, colleges, and units on applicable policies and procedures.
  • The Director will ensure purchase orders and standing purchase orders are kept current with funds and closed timely.
  • This position will also strategically guide spending decisions and make recommendations as it relates to budget requirements and suggest and implement adjustments to avoid overages, as well as make recommendations on cost savings or efficiencies.
  • The Director of Business Operations will also ensure that a productive and cooperative working relationship is developed and maintained with the Finance Office, Office of Budget & Fiscal Planning, Human Resources, and the fiscal managers for all schools, colleges and departments.
  • They will be responsible for reducing risk and increasing the ethical standing of the University. They will also be responsible for developing contacts with University partners and stakeholders to identify and investigate areas of concern.
  • The Director will serve on campus committees and complete other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, business administration, finance, accounting, public administration, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible finance or budget related experience.
  • Familiarity with the State of Colorado and University of Colorado budgetary processes
  • Knowledge of accounting and budget management
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of MS Office applications, particularly MS Excel and MS Access

Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred experience in higher education or state government.
  • Familiarity with PeopleSoft or other financial system experience is highly desired.
  • Experience training others on processes, procedures, tools

Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $104,022 to $132,316.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
