SUMMARY:

The nation’s foremost music museum, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame seeks a Director of Communications to join our dynamic team to generate extensive earned media coverage. The Director is responsible for the overall planning and direction of media relations activities, building and maintaining strong relationships with local, regional, national, and international media across news, music, travel, entertainment, and other verticals. The Director will also partner with artist publicists to generate mutually beneficial media coverage. The Director will help media tell our brand stories, compelling fans to visit the Museum, attend events, shop our ecommerce and retail stores, join us as a member, and engage with us digitally. Solution focused and forward thinking, the Director tracks and reports on coverage and estimated media value, shares key learnings, and takes action to optimize results. The Director fosters the growth and development of one direct report and effective relationships with external agency partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Creates and executes plans to generate extensive earned media coverage for Induction, exhibits, events, educational offerings, and other key initiatives
  • Works closely with other departments to gather information and craft compelling media pitches and presentations, press releases, interview talking points, and FAQs
  • Actively pursues interviews and editorial opportunities with broadcast, digital, print, and radio outlets in local, regional, national, and international markets
  • Maintains and leverages up-to-date media database within Cision tool
  • Manages media requests for interviews, assets, and information
  • Coordinates broadcast photo and video shoots; greets crews on site

2. Actively manages and develops the Communications team
  • Supervises department staff and interns
  • Directs external media relations agency partners
  • Reviews priorities, workload, schedules, and assignments
  • Provides direction and feedback throughout the year and prepares and shares annual performance evaluations

3. Helps craft key messages
  • Works with Vice President of Marketing & Sales to develop key messages, language and copy for media statements, interview talking points, fan communications, and chat bot responses
  • Develops, evaluates, and adjusts messages for Museum leadership and other spokespeople
  • Provides media training for spokespeople and provides feedback on interviews

4. Manages media relations surrounding the annual Induction Ceremony
  • Works with external agency partner to announce Nominees, Inductees, presenters & performers, securing extensive national coverage throughout the annual Induction cycle
  • Facilitates media credential applications; vet and approve / reject outlets to cover Ceremony from press room; answer questions; provide assets; follow up on coverage
  • Joins planning meetings with Inductee teams to secure artist participation in media and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame interviews and Red Carpet
  • Works with external agency partner to actively manage press room and media participation

5. Travels off-site and/or out of state as required
  • Travel includes but is not limited to annual Induction Ceremony, executive road shows, deskside meetings, traveling exhibit openings, and off-site events

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in media relations, public relations, communications or related field
  • 7-10 years of professional, hands-on experience planning and securing earned media at the local, regional, national, and international level for a B2C brand
  • Familiarity with Cision or other communications management software
  • Knowledge of and passion for rock & roll history and music

  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Familiarity with SEO best practices as they relate to press releases and other digital resources in our online press room
  • Strong collaboration skills; a team player who works well with others and enjoys partnering across teams
  • Ability to also work independently while seeking direction and feedback as needed
  • Experience managing a direct report and a strong desire to facilitate professional growth and development with helpful direction, meaningful work, and effective feedback

  • Ability to successfully pass a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum reference check, background investigation and drug screening
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week; ability to be reachable to respond to Museum needs and requests. Ability to work additional hours as business needs demand.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Ability to work up to 40 hours per week including some evenings and weekends. Ability to work additional hours as workload demands, balanced with additional time off. Hours are primarily 8:30 am – 5:30 pm Monday through Friday with the flexibility to work remotely up to two days per week pending varying on-site needs.
