This position is located at Virginia Department of Corrections’ Headquarters in Richmond, Virginia. Richmond, the capital of Virginia, is among America’s oldest major cities. The Director of Communications serves as a key member of the Virginia Department of Corrections’ executive team and is accountable for advancing the Department’s mission, vision, values and public relations goals through building and strengthening relationships with diverse stakeholders within the communities we service and multifaceted partners we interact with on a regular basis. The position focuses on outreach activities and networking across the State in order to proactively generate media and/or special interest stories, effectively respond to media requests, and disseminate Department of Corrections news both externally and internally.
The Director of Communications is responsible for the planning and implementation of comprehensive agency-wide public relations program. Provides leadership and creativity in developing and managing programs, policy development, executing public and media relations programs, publications, customer service, marketing, public awareness, and other initiatives. Manages a small staff with responsibility for budget and program resources.

Minimum Qualifications
Extensive working knowledge of public relations and marketing practices including knowledge of media channels, technology, and community and citizen-based groups. Demonstrated excellence in management and leadership skills application, excellent communications skills (written and verbal) with employee base, and suitable for a community and media relations environment. Success in assessment, development, and implementation of complex and comprehensive public relations and/or marketing programs. Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, Business Administration, Journalism, Political Science, or related field and extensive, progressively responsible experience in public relations or marketing or combination of equivalent education or experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Prefer Public Relations experience in a Governmental or Human Services setting. Prefer participation in appropriate Criminal Justice associations.
