Position Overview

The Director of Development (Grade 2) provides leadership to the council’s comprehensive development program to include annual campaigns, fundraising events, major gift solicitation, endowment, capital, alumni relations and other development efforts. This position reports to the Scout Executive and gives leadership to the development director and development administrative assistant. This position is personally responsible for successful major gift solicitation, endowment fundraising, capital fundraising, the Distinguished Citizens Awards Lunch, and alumni relations and solicitation.

Responsibilities
  • Growing Leaders Campaign (Annual Fund): Working with the development director, provide leadership to achieving the council’s annual campaign goal. Give direct leadership working with the VP Development to achieving the executive board campaign goal annually.
  • Prospect Development: Develop and implement a plan to identify and qualify prospective major gift donors from our Scouting family of volunteers, parents, and alumni. Maintain the council’s Top 50 Prospect List.
  • Prospect & Donor Relationships & Communication: Cultivate the relationship between the council and major gift donors and prospects. The plan should include “point of entry” events, follow-up calls, one-on-one meetings, program tours, events, recognition, and personalized correspondence. Keep donors informed and enthused about how their gift is being used by the Narragansett Council to impact youth.
  • Major Gift Solicitation: Conduct a minimum of 50 one-on-one major gift solicitations annually.
  • Endowment: Organize and promote the annual Fleur de Lis Dinner, estate planning seminars, as a recognition and fundraising event for endowment.
  • Capital Fundraising: Conduct capital fundraising programs to include grant writing and individual solicitations ot achieve ongoing capital projects and support the capital campaign to include recruiting and guiding a campaign committee.
  • Special Events: Direct the council’s Distinguished Citizens Awards Lunch and other events as may be determined.
  • Alumni Relations and Solicitation: Develop and implement annual program of cultivation and solicitation of Scouting alumni: Eagle Scout alumni, Eagle Scout parents, camp and camp staff alumni. Coordinate and conduct annual alumni gatherings in Rhode Island, Long Island, at camps and an annual week of events in Florida.
  • Prospect & Donor Records: Maintain accurate records of all fundraising events and donor interactions. Become proficient in and utilize the council’s CRM system, Blackbaud to document donor information and interactions.
  • Communication & Marketing: Oversee the development of and implementation of all donor communication (print, web, social media, other)
  • Budget: Prepare and manage development budgets and donation goals to meet the development objectives of the council. Manage expenses monthly to stay within limits and participate in the budget meetings.
  • Vision & Mission: Enthusiastically promote the Vision and Mission of the Narragansett Council with members of the community. Help instill a passion for Scouting in others through personal example.
  • Stay abreast of legal and technical developments in charitable donations and changing tax laws as they apply to development.
  • Serve as member of the Scout Executive’s Leadership Team and help guide the council’s overall strategy to fulfill its vision and mission.

Education

Bachelor’s degree is required

Qualifications
  • Either a commissioned professional Scouter with 3 or more experience as a development director or a fundraising professional from another not-for-profit with at least 6 or more years of successful development experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in achieving objectives, directing resources, planning programs and events and setting priorities.
  • Organizational skills and proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Possesses excellent communication (verbal and written) skills and is personally appealing in one-on-one situations.
  • Has executive ability and is a team player.
  • Ability to discipline himself/herself in terms of time, responsibilities, and organization.
  • Successful record of soliciting gifts in person.
  • Successful record of recruiting, engaging, and supporting high-level volunteers
  • Fundraising skills with a successful record of campaign growth.
  • Has the ability to network with people, identify potential volunteers and donors, and then engage those persons with the organization delivering results.
  • Must be generally familiar with the Scouting organization and personally embrace the vision, mission and programs of the Narragansett Council and the Boy Scouts of America.
  • Successful record of conducting annual fundraising campaigns.
  • Successful record of special event fundraising.
  • Successful record raising money through grant writing.
  • Proven ability to write request letters.
  • Fiscal management and budget development.
  • Ability to communicate plans effectively to staff and provide leadership to plan development.
  • Proven skills in systems management.
  • Experience with support staff management.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of the Scouting program

Hybrid work environment–all team members must have a home office and ability to work from home much of the time. New team members work for 90 days out of council office, then transition to hybrid work format.

Salary range based on relevant experience and track record of success: $80,000 – $125,000
