We are seeking an individual to fill the position of Director of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The Director of EMS oversees the daily activities of EMS department, establishes organizational goals, and directs all assigned EMS personnel. You must be a Paramedic to be considered for this position. The EMS Director will also function as an on-shift field medic working a 48/96 shift rotation. Directs the staff and programs of the emergency services unit. Acts as a liaison between the Melissa Memorial Hospital and the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department. Develops and implements a business plan to drive service-line growth and improve operations in terms of quality and processes. Ensures quality care for patients. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
Essential Functions:
- Directs development of specific short and long-range programs and project plans to obtain the facility objectives for the EMS Department.
- Responsible for the planning and coordination of Emergency Services daily activities, the operational efficiency and effectiveness as well as major impact on all other hospital areas.
- Effectively interviews and selects a qualified number of personnel as required to meet department objectives.
- Provides direction to the staff of the EMS Department. Reviews performance of the department staff and approves staff evaluations. Responsible for appropriate disciplinary action of staff members as needed.
- Maintain and oversee the EMS staff schedule, ensuring adequate coverage for all shifts.
- Ensures that staff are compliant with all required licensures/certification and continuing education.
- Oversee, maintain and administer all education for all staff in relation to departmental requirements, expectations and changes.
- Oversees the prioritization of projects and directs resources to ensure the attainment of department goals.
- Responsible for ensuring the department meets and adheres to all applicable federal, state, JCAHO, and local regulatory agency requirements and for ensuring the department and facilities success in any regulatory survey.
- Participates on various committees and other task forces as may be established by management to plan, organize and drive the facility.
- Responsible for making decisions required to maintain acceptable operations based on strategic goals and policies. Displays ingenuity and foresight in determining the most appropriate solution in the absence of established guidelines.
- Confers with other department directors when necessary to resolve procedural difficulties, clarifying department responsibilities, objectives and resolving identified problems.
- Creating treatment protocols or plans for the EMS department.
- Makes recommendation on contract initiation, renewals and termination in relation to the EMS department and/or its equipment.
- Responsible for special projects as assigned by the Senior Leadership team.
- Actively seeks ways to control costs without comprising patient safety, quality of care or the services delivered.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system and reports trends in occurrences to staff. This information is used to improve patient safety.
- Ensures staff is educated on established guidelines for reporting a significant medical error or unanticipated outcome in the patient’s care which results in patient harm.
- Addresses patient safety in the Performance Improvement Plan.
- As a crisis prevention intervention trained staff member, responds appropriately to a manpower request.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5+ years working as Paramedic
- 1+ years Leadership experience
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical, problem-solving and communication skills
- Thorough understanding of Colorado State EMS laws/regulations
- Self-starter who is ambitious and dedicated
- Ability to manage project tasks, timelines and multiple priorities
- Ability to influence people at the provider level
- Ability to lead others in a team environment
- Knowledge of best and emerging industry practices
- Demonstrates good judgment, resourcefulness & flexibility
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Services, healthcare related area; or equivalent education, training and experience
- Five (5) years’ experience providing EMS support to an organization OR five (5) years of experience working as a Paramedic Manager/ Supervisor.
- Experience Managing or leading an EMS departments or team

About Us:
Melissa Memorial Hospital is a 13-bed critical access hospital with level IV trauma services. It is a model rural hospital with 1 operating room, surgical procedure room, 4 bay emergency room, and radiology including 64-slice CT scanner and mammography, MRI, and Nuclear Medicine, along with other ancillary services. The hospital is co-located with a family practice clinic and retail pharmacy services. Other services include chemotherapy, general surgery, podiatry, cardiology, orthopedic surgery, progressive rehab services, and wound care. MMH operates a full-time EMS service and maintains a 24/7 AirLife Helicopter base.

Services are provided in a beautiful and relatively new facility that was completed in 2008, and then renovated and expanded in 2016.
