POSITION TITLE:
Director of Finance

STATUS: Exempt

STANDARD HOURS: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am–5:00 pm

LOCATION: Hybrid Schedule after initial training (generally 3 days in office and 2 days remote)

REPORTS TO: Chief Financial Officer

ASSIGNED TO: Finance/Accounting Department

SALARY: Starting at $75,000 and increases with relevant experience


Position Summary
:

Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Finance is responsible for the day-to-day accounting operations of the organization’s $35 million budget and provides fiscal responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and grants administration. The Director will assist the CFO in the creation and monitoring of the organization’s policies regarding financial integrity, risk management, and business operations and ensures systems and procedures are in place to support accurate and efficient financial reporting, effective program implementation, and flawless annual audits. The Director will work closely with the CFO to monitor and guide the financial direction of the organization to ensure College Now is successful and financially stable. The Director will work collaboratively with organization’s team members and report to the Chief Financial Officer, supervising two accounting staff.


Essential Functions:

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Manages the accounting staff, including recruiting, hiring, and evaluating.
  • Coordinates training programs for new staff and identifies training needs for current staff.
  • Develops, implements, and conducts accounting trainings for non-accounting staff in conjunction with CFO.


Accounting Operations Responsibilities:

  • Oversees all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for daily accounting operations; reviews and approves account distribution and supporting documentation for all financial data entered into the general ledger software package (assets, liabilities, fund balances, revenues, expenses and payroll); oversees and assists in monthly general ledger close; oversees all aspects of accounts payable, accounts receivable and daily cash receipt and banking.
  • Reviews and approves monthly reconciliations and schedules of various general ledger accounts; ensures proper tracking of endowment investment activity.
  • Prepares and analyzes monthly and annual financial data and financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; monitors progress and changes.
  • Oversees all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; ensures compliance with financial reporting requirements for government, corporate and foundation grants; oversees indirect cost rate requirements for government grants.
  • In conjunction with the CFO, develops and administers financial reporting systems, internal controls and safeguards for receipt of revenue, expenses and program budgets.
  • Continuously collaborates with program managers to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.
  • Develops policies and standards for revenues, ensuring collections are complete and current.
  • Assists in the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and performance analysis reports. Develops and coordinates necessary accounting and statistical data and reports for all departments.
  • Assists in external audit activities, including preparing any necessary schedules and reports to complete the annual financial statement audit and federal tax return.
  • Manages the general ledger software package (“Blackbaud”), suggests modifications, creates reports for management, and ensures all updates and enhancements are installed on a timely basis.


Required Skills/Abilities
:

  • Thorough understanding of budgetary and accounting principles, practices, and policies.

  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software (Blackbaud familiarity preferred).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.


Education and Experience
:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required. Certified Public Accountant designation preferred.
  • Five years of experience in a complex accounting department (nonprofit preferred) or with a public accounting firm.
  • Track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential.
  • Successful supervisory experience in a team environment with a collaborative focus.
