The Director – Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction to the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) Team and overseeing the strategic management and analysis of American Campus Communities’ financials through modeling, projections, actuals, and reporting in accordance with GAAP and cash basis accounting principles. This position collaborates with internal stakeholders in pursuit of collective business objectives, provides strategic support to senior leadership, and evaluates processes and provides recommendations to increase efficiency and produce high quality outputs.

Critical Duties:
  • Oversee the workflow and prioritization of FP&A projects and ensure timely and accurate updates and reporting.
  • Proactively and effectively analyze business results to identify trends and key performance indicators to assist in strategic financial management.
  • Provide comprehensive support for corporate and property FP&A needs to include, but not limited to: budgeting process; variance analysis; strategic forecasting; decision support and guidance; etc.
  • Provide support to the FP&A Team to ensure a high level of collaboration, knowledge, and service to the communities within their designated portfolios.
  • Facilitate the FP&A Team’s function as a liaison between various departments across the business to collect and organize relevant information.
  • Lead collaboration with the Information Technology department to assist with the efficiency, delivery, and ongoing implementation of the budgeting and forecasting system.
  • Facilitate the preparation of monthly reporting packages for senior leadership, including both financial and non-financial data for review.
  • Proactively identify system(s) and process improvements that enhance the overall business user experience and increase the Company’s accuracy and strategy in financial forecasting and management.
  • Assist in managing and monitoring the financial health of the Company to promote success and growth.
  • Ensure compliance with Sarbanes Oxley and departmental policies and procedures related to the Company’s budgeting and forecasting processes.

  • Effectively communicate and problem solve with team members, other departments, and senior leadership in all necessary areas related to financial forecasting and management.
  • Ensure the FP&A Team maintains strong working knowledge of financial modeling and current Excel functions/features to ensure efficiency in all daily processes.
  • Coordinate and oversee the FP&A Team’s involvement in regular meetings with Operations stakeholders as needed and/or requested.
  • Participate in regular meetings with Information Technology stakeholders to establish and maintain FP&A’s data needs from various ACC systems.
  • Work collaboratively to identify and drive initiatives to continuously improve, automate, and scale processes and systems, achieve goals, and ensure work is completed accurately and timely.
  • Drive improved employee engagement and encourage professional development of the FP&A Team by continuously seeking opportunities to assist in their growth.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Carries out supervisor responsibilities including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems. Provides regular updates to senior management.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Business, or Finance, and/or 5-7 years’ experience in student/multi-family housing financial planning and analysis, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Student housing and/or multi-family real estate industry and operations including, but not limited to: financials practices, leasing and marketing, management, and residential services, etc.
