Job description
Background
Public Prep is an award-winning network of charter schools across Manhattan and the Bronx and the nation’s first non-profit tuition-free charter school network that develops exceptional Pre-K, and single-gender elementary and middle public schools. We pursue continuous excellence through our dedication to an inclusive community focused on scholar, family, and staff collaboration. Our scholars are resilient and empathetic, guided to realize their power and promise through our four core values of scholarship, excellence, community, and integrity.

Our teaching model is grounded in an anti-racist framework, and designed to incorporate a culturally responsive approach that is informed by data to cultivate an environment that empowers scholars to become independent learners. At Public Prep we believe race, income level, and zip code should not define your destiny, systemic and institutional racism must be disrupted, and all scholars should be empowered and ready to enter high school with voice, choice, opportunity and independence.

Primary Function & Position Overview
The Director of Humanities reports directly to the Chief Academic Officer and is responsible for providing expert knowledge and network-wide leadership with regards to our Elementary and Middle School literacy instruction throughout the Public Preparatory Network. S/he is a dynamic and innovative leader who ensures that ELA, social studies, and elective classrooms, across the network, challenge students to think and work hard every day with complex, real life problems that can be solved individually and in groups. Managing a team of Assistant Directors and Instructional Coaches, and coaching the school-based Humanities leaders across the network, the Director of Humanities owns the curriculum, assessment, professional development, and network alignment on our Humanities instruction.

The Director of Humanities is an integral member of the Academic Team, serving as a key member of the Academic Cabinet. The Director of Humanities is responsible for driving results for a diverse student body, and in collaboration with the members of the Cabinet, provides direct coaching and actionable feedback to members of school leadership teams across the network. The Director of Humanities is a highly motivated and collaborative leader who takes initiative to solve problems and address challenges through an equity lens, centering the needs of all scholars on the pathway to achieving their full potential. The Director of Humanities models the core values of scholarship, merit, community, and responsibility and embodies a growth-mindset.

Our ideal candidate for a Director of Humanities has an unwavering belief that our scholars can achieve at an exceptionally high level. Beyond that, they will:

Lead Humanities Program Vision and Implementation
. You will refine and lead our vision for literacy instruction that is grounded in our commitment to high quality, equity-driven instruction. You will implement the literacy vision across the schools and network by training and coaching school-based leaders.

Manage, Coach, and Develop Leaders.
Through direct management of the network humanities team and coaching of school-based humanities leaders, you will ensure that the leaders in front of our teachers and scholars are champions of our program.

Lead Professional Development.
You will develop and lead professional development sessions for leaders and teachers that develop skills, deepen understanding of content, and allow adults to more deeply live out our mission and vision.

Lead Curriculum Ideation
. As our needs evolve, you will lead our efforts to curate new and/or additional humanities curriculum that is grounded in love, achievement, and anti-racism.

Analyze Data.
Deeply analyze student achievement data (student work samples, weekly quizzes, interim assessments and state tests) to determine how to better develop materials and provide targeted, high quality teacher training.

Build and Maintain Strong Relationships.
Success in this role depends on your ability to develop strong working relationships with assistant principals, their principals, network leaders, literacy teachers, and external partners. The strength of those relationships will determine the pace of development of the literacy team.

Who You Are
Our ideal candidate for our Director of Humanities has an unwavering belief that our scholars can achieve at an exceptionally high level. Beyond that, they are:

Deeply committed to serving our kids.
You have elected to work with historically underserved scholars, and do this work because you believe that all scholars, regardless of background, are capable of excellence - and that it’s on us as adults to get our kids there. You can speak knowledgeably about our mission, and demonstrate a commitment to our educational model. You understand that the challenges faced by scholars in New York City are unique and specific, and you’re excited to work within the communities we serve.

Radically committed to building antiracist, achievement-oriented, loving schools for all learners.
You are committed to eliminating inequities in education for scholars in NYC. You are inspired by our Core Values and committed to living and working within them.

A Conspicuous and Passionate Reader.
Because so much of your work is about inspiring other people to read, you must be an outspoken advocate for literacy, a lover of books, and a reader yourself, who is always eager to recommend a great book.

An instructional guru.
You have at least 4 years of teaching and instructional/school leadership experience with a demonstrated track record of exceptional student outcomes based on your instruction. You nerd out over content, long-term planning, and creating instructional materials that allow students to meet ambitious goals.

A data maven.
You look for and are able to discern trends that drive your decision making, and you evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions based on how the data changes.

A leader of leaders.
You’re passionate about leading and coaching teams and individuals to achieve strong results for scholars. You love and actively seek opportunities to develop others through ongoing professional development, clear expectations and accountability, strong inspirational and motivational skills, high leverage feedback, and targeted professional development.

Driven by results.
You are passionate about achieving results for scholars, and you are willing to think outside the box to achieve our shared vision of excellence for our scholars. You don’t give yourself a pat on the back just for checking the boxes and completing the inputs. You are only happy after you achieve and exceed your goals. You delegate when needed, set deadlines, and hold others accountable to get across important finish lines.

An A+ Communicator.
You’ve got a knack for speaking and writing clearly, succinctly and persuasively. You think about time, place, and format to share a message that will resonate to accomplish your goals.

Deeply knowledgeable about literacy and literacy instruction.
To lead our leaders, teachers, and scholars, you must have a deep understanding of K-12 literacy and at least three years of teaching experience and school leadership with a demonstrated track record of exceptional student outcomes.

A gritty problem-solver.
You keep it cool when facing challenges, approach problems with viable solutions, and know when you need to roll up your sleeves to support your team.

Additional Qualifications

    • At least four (4) years of demonstrated success improving student outcomes in literacy in a leadership capacity at an elementary or secondary public or charter school, preferably as an Instructional Leader or Principal.
    • An M.A., Ed.M or Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and/or Educational Administration, preferred
