Job description
The Director of Operations will provide leadership, direction and hands on involvement while managing personnel and processes involved in SPT’s Operations function in Elizabethtown. The Director of Operations is responsible for enabling and enforcing Fortive’s operational priorities of (in order of priority) Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost and Inventory. To this end he/she drives continuous improvement in all aspects of SPT Operations, under full utilization of the FBS toolkit and factory digitalization opportunities. Other than supporting SPT’s strategic and policy deployment objectives, the Director of Operations is responsible for leading the day-to-day operating activities along with production capacity planning, capital project justification, risk analysis, and support for new product/process introductions. He/she holds P&L responsibility for SPT up to gross profit level, and overall responsibility for occupational health and safety.Essential Functions :
Responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Elizabethtown facility
Responsible for managing and mentoring of the VSLs, Team Leaders, and other professional staff
Drive continuous improvement and lean principles through leading the application and teaching of the Fortive Business System, to achieve goals for safety, quality, delivery, cost and inventory
Drive continuous improvement through deployment of digital capabilities in the manufacturing processes
Provide input and recommendations for the identification and selection of improvement projects
Participate in, facilitate, and/or train kaizen or improvement project teams
Communicate safety, quality, delivery and cost related objectives in a way that motivates the team to achieve them
Interface effectively with other business leaders to achieve overall goals using shared resources
Organizational design and talent management for Elizabethtown operations organization
Setting and management of performance and development objectives for the Elizabethtown operations organization
Work with Design and Implementation teams on manufacturability, capability, and reliability reviews
Management and improvement of external and internal quality performance
Maintain and support the ISO9001-based quality system
Management and improvement of on-time delivery performance
Management and improvement of manufacturing costs, with particular focus on labour efficiency
Manage labor availability to complete workload and work to enhance cross-training for increased labor flexibility
Management and improvement of inventory levels as well as external and internal logistics
Principle owner Fortive Materials Planning (FMP) processes (Kanban, etc.)
Assist in data collection and analysis for new business opportunities
P&L ownership for Hengstler Aldingen down to gross profit level, including ownership of budgeting process, monthly forecasting, tracking of actuals, and all related improvement activity; has budgetary approval responsibility.
Assist in achieving Policy Deployment and Strategic Plan objectives and participate in monthly PD reviews.
Perform benchmarking studies as required
Drive "best practices" in all areas of responsibility
Assist in the development of the strategic plan in support of area
Define manufacturing requirements for suppliers
Support key account and other special customer requests
Responsibility for the Elizabethtown site in general, including facilities and equipment repair, maintenance, health, safety, and environmental compliance
Driving cultural change towards a strong health and safety culture
Relationships:
Reports to the Vice President / General Manager NA
Closely collaborates with Global Engineering and Sustainment Engineering
Closely collaborates with Procurement
Closely collaborates with Finance on matters related to P&L management
Closely collaborates with HR to build a HR strategy for the Elizabethtown site
Closely collaborates with other global Operations teams, focusing on coordination between sites and P&Ls, but also on mutual benchmarking
Closely collaborates with Sales and Marketing
Interacts with customers, contractors and suppliers at all levels required
Interacts with other internal departments including Application Management, Marketing, within Hengstler as required
Measures of Performance:
Leading and lagging safety indicators (accidents, near miss reports)
Internal and external quality indicators (PPM)
On-time delivery indicators (OTD, Past Due)
Material spend indicators (including scrap, VAVE)
Labor productivity indicators (including labor variance, productivity)
Inventory indicators (net inventory, E&O, inventory turns)
Cost and Capex vs. budget/forecast
Education, Background and Skill Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field; Master preferred
Minimum of five years of Operations Management experience in a complex manufacturing environment
Minimum of one experience leading an organization from the beginning of their lean journey – preference for multiple plant experiences.
Working knowledge of various manufacturing processes with preferences for assembly, injection molding, SMT production, CNC, plating and / or machining
Knowledge of quality principles and tools (problem analysis, statistical tools, design of experiments, control charts, and other quality methodologies)
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to effectively interface with a variety of people at various technical and management levels
Strong Microsoft Office skills, data entry ability, and knowledge of databases, spreadsheets, and statistical tools
Demonstrated proficiency in time and project management
Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing a must
Ability to travel 25%
