Job Description


Summary

The Director of Operations provides leadership and oversight for all personnel, including: PBX, Front Desk, Concierge, Guest Services, Ski Concierge, Adventure, Health Center, Housekeeping, Security, Engineering, Culinary and Food and Beverage. Accepts responsibility for the health, safety, and welfare of guests and employees. Accountable with the General Manager for all personnel actions, assets, and hotel property.

Essential Job Functions
  • Has complete authority, responsibility and accountability in the absence of the General Manager, unless such authority is expressly denied
  • Develop job descriptions, procedures and operating standards for all areas under the position’s jurisdiction
  • Ensure that all personnel related responsibilities (i.e. job descriptions, performance standards, wage, salary and performance reviews) are compiled within a timely manner
  • Responsible for preparation of annual budget for departments and areas of responsibilities and preparing monthly accounting reports and forecasts as requested
  • Clearly convey the overall operating philosophy of the hotel to subordinates, specifically as it relates to fair and equal treatment of employees, creating an enjoyable, secure work environment, reviewing employee’s personal goals and objectives, practicing friendly, sincere management
  • Lead with intellectual and emotional maturity, demonstrating a personal philosophy of life and work habits, practicing consultative supervision and observing ethical business practices
  • Drive innovation in all areas of the hotel
  • Take a visible leadership role towards hotel guests
  • Ensures effective communication and collaboration throughout the hotel
  • Make General Manager and aware of guest’s comments and complaints
  • Comply with all policies and procedures for the Administrative and General Department, The Little Nell, and Aspen Skiing Company
  • Is familiar with hotel fire and safety procedures. Assist in emergency and security procedures as directed by management and ensure that all employees know emergency procedures
  • Coordinate ongoing training activities for the department
  • Establish and reinforce commitment of the highest standards of service, quality and overall experience of guests
  • Promote and uphold The Little Nell (TLN) standards of service. Ensure Forbes standards are followed and implemented
  • Maintain proper staffing levels and ensure all candidates meet job specifications
  • Build relationships with all departments, specifically Accounting, Sales and Reservations
  • Ensure all guest challenges/incidents are resolved quickly ensuring the guest’s satisfaction with the resolution
  • Develop strategies and programs to facilitate attainment of departmental and personal goals
  • Work closely and communicate with the Rooms Division Manager and the Director of Food &Beverage on the daily operations of the Room and F&B Divisions

The budgeted salary range for this position is $140,000-$160,000. Actual pay will be dependent on budget and experience, all our salaried roles are eligible for bonus.


Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive hotel experience
  • Significant time spent in top-of-market operations
  • 2-4 years division head level experience in either Food and Beverage or Rooms Division
  • 1-2 years experience at department head level
  • Competent in understanding and interpreting accounting and financial controls as they relate to all aspects of hotel operations
  • Understanding of cost and controls and experience in implementing the same
  • Ability to act as General Manager, when needed

Supervision Given and Received

Given: Exercises direct supervision over the employees of The Little Nell Hotel. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, frequent and detailed review of work, training, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Received: Works under limited supervision of the General Manager. Receives guidance in terms of broad goals and overall objectives and is responsible for establishing strategical methods to attain them. Can formulate policies but does not necessarily have final authority for approval. Review of work is not detailed and emphasizes accomplishment of broad work objectives, rather than specific assignments.

Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand, type and sit at desk/computer for most of the work shift executing repetitive movements
  • No adverse or hazardous conditions
  • Not required, but preferred to be able to occasionally lift, push or pull 25 lbs. individually or with assistance (weight limits can vary according to position, but no more than 50)
