GENERAL SUMMARY/BASIC PURPOSE OF JOB:


The Director of Pharmacy Services is responsible for the efficient operation of the systems hospital pharmacy. The Director establishes standards of quality, productivity and performance in accordance with policies and procedures and the requirements of State and Federal regulatory agencies. The Director is a key leader for the hospital and exemplifies our values and supports the mission and vision of the organization. This leader is responsible for the supporting a patient centric approach through key initiatives within the pillars of excellence of Quality/Safety, Service, People, Financial and Growth. Within this balanced model, the director is responsible for overseeing, organizing, directing, growing and controlling activities of assigned areas to ensure that high quality care is effectively and efficiently provided. This includes the continuum of care to provide integrated services for all hospital inpatient pharmacy locations through direction, support, and development of supervisors and staff through collaboration with medical staff, other hospital directors, administrative staff, community groups, and agencies. The Director will maintain contact with other department heads, medical staff and nursing staff to determine needs, resolve problems, improve processes and promote effective drug therapy. The director is responsible to maintain all state and federal pharmacy licensures. The director will maintain narcotic surveillance and USP regulations in accordance with state and federal regulations.

  • Reports to: Vice President, Operations
  • Provides Supervision to: Pharmacy Department staff

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES


  • Coordinates and supervises overall Pharmacy Department operations. Ensures optimal efficiency, effectiveness and overall profitability of Pharmacy Department operations. Provides Supervision and care coordination to applicable leadership staff in the following acute care departments for Mount Sinai Hospital, Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital, and Odgen Commons supervision to align services, policies, procedures.
  • Develops and maintains pharmacy services in accordance with all State and Federal regulations, accepted standards, professional practices and medical center policies and procedures. This includes controlled substance surveillance, USP regulations and all other state and federal regulations.
  • Assists in the development and administration of the Pharmacy annual budget and submits capital expenditure requests per policy in a timely manner. Assumes responsibility and accountability for fiscal management of the inpatient pharmacy department. Monitors the budget, analyzes variances utilizing data, and takes corrective action as necessary
  • Initiates, develops and implements Quality Improvement actions for the Pharmacy Department. Strengthens focus on excellence in a culture that measures quality and continuous improvement of performance to meet the needs and expectations of patients, community, and state regulations
  • Responsible for the planning, supervision, coordination and successful execution of all activities related to the Pharmacy Department’s operations. Works with hospital leadership to engage medical staff on a prospective basis to build consensus on pharmacy-related strategic initiatives and emerging medication trends and management that affect practice patterns.
  • Supervises Pharmacy Department staff including: hiring, orientation, training, determining work assignments, delegating work effectively, overseeing the scheduling of Pharmacy operations, conducts performance evaluations and initiates corrective and disciplinary actions as required.
  • Creates and maintains job descriptions for all Pharmacy Department staff positions. Ensures the completion of all performance evaluations in a timely manner. Initiates performance improvement plans as required.
  • Reviews and revises Pharmacy Department policies and procedures manual as required. Ensures that organizational and departmental policies and procedures are current, appropriate, and followed consistently.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned/required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:



MINIMUM EDUCATION:

  • Graduation from an accredited Pharmacy Doctoral program.
  • MHA, or MBA, or MSN preferred
  • PGY1 pharmacy residency completion strongly preferred

MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • At least five years supervisory experience in management and administration within a healthcare setting.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Highly developed administrative, managerial and leadership abilities.
  • Ability set priorities, make critical decisions and respond effectively to client concerns.
  • Able to develop and maintain a team environment to ensure goals and objectives are met.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Licensed as a Registered Pharmacist in the State of Illinois.
