Agency Information: Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. OSH serves individuals from 36 counties in Kansas in collaboration with 12 Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs). The centers refer individuals for admission to the hospital through a collaborative screening process. There are currently two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus in Miami county: Osawatomie State Hospital and Adair Acute Care.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The incumbent of this position serves as a key member of the clinical and administrative leadership team for a free standing, acute care psychiatric hospital. The incumbent is required to ensure that all relevant standards related to the provision of social work and therapy services are met by the therapy staff and that all hospital policies and procedures are implemented. The incumbent works in collaboration with the Medical Director, Director of Nursing and other clinical staff to ensure that assessments are completed, treatment plans are appropriately developed and implemented, therapeutic services are provided and discharge plans are implemented in a timely and professional manner.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Supervision of Clinical Services: Assesses and enhances the clinical competency of the Social Work and other therapeutic staff assigned to the department; monitors the accuracy and quality of work of all Social Work staff. Oversees that Social Work and other therapeutic staff maintain current privileges and keep current with the trends in social work practice, interventions and therapies for patients. Oversees that performance evaluations are completed on time. Oversees that Social Work and other therapeutic staff obtain orientation and job specific training for the population they serve, and that they demonstrate a satisfactory level of competencies in the areas outlined in their position description. Coordinates with Human Resources in the recruitment and retention of employees; reviews the qualifications and credentials of the applicants; and makes recommendations for appointment to the Superintendent. Evaluates, in conjunction with Executive Clinical Team and other Service Directors, the need for, and configuration of therapeutic treatment services. Collaborates with the Service Directors to evaluate the quality and use of services, to recommend improvements and plan for essential services to be provided in the future. Provides clinical coverage for Social Services on the units as necessary. Participates in the clinical and administrative reviews when such reviews of patient issues are requested. Oversees Patient Advocacy, Peer Support and Chaplain Services.

Assessments & Treatment: Analyzes and evaluates social work and therapeutic services rendered in order to provide quality patient care and ensure maximum utilization of staff time, facilities and activities. Provides oversight and active quality reviews of psychosocial assessments, discharge plans and other reports required to ensure that all applicable standards are met or exceeded. Routinely reviews the content and processes related to therapeutic services provided to ensure that they are timely, effective and appropriate for the patients being served. Ensures that the psychosocial assessment recommendations are integrated into the treatment plan and discharge plans. Provides oversight of the discharge process to ensure that the discharge plan is implemented promptly, thoroughly and regularly updated. In collaboration with the patient and treatment team, develops and ensures that post-discharge follow-up is completed.

Performance Improvement: Participates in the performance improvement processes of the Hospital; assists in the review, analysis and reporting of data and reports, and recommends interventions or plans of actions. Actively assesses the ongoing discharge planning process for the hospital; develops, implements and completes quality improvement projects related to the discharge planning process. Reviews the work of the department and develops proactive measures of success related to content, timeliness, or other indicators to ensure that benchmarks for performance are maintained or exceeded. Attends program, Hospital and interdisciplinary committees such as the Executive Clinical Team (ECT), task forces/work groups, program meetings and other meetings or projects as assigned. Works together with the different administrative and clinical services within the hospitals and program staff to collaborate in planning / formulation / implementation of policies and/or processes to address patient needs and to meet the hospitals’ mission and vision. Provides consultations to treatment teams and supervisors regarding clinical issues and recommends interventions.

Other Duties as Assigned: Assist with projects and services as assigned by the Administrator of the Hospital. Maintain licensure in the State of Kansas. Continuing education / training obtained during scheduled work time is directly related to adult inpatient psychiatry, patient safety, and promoting positive treatment outcomes. Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to ensuring the agency is adequately staffed during and immediately following natural and/or manmade disasters, infectious disease outbreaks, and/or acts of terrorism. Assists other employees in the work unit in accomplishing assignments as necessary.


Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Licensing & Certification: Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work is required

  • Minimum Qualifications: Must be licensed by the State of Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board as a Licensed Bachelor’s Social Worker. Two years of experience in planning, organizing and directing the work of a department, program or agency. Clinical experience in completing psychosocial assessments, short-term crisis intervention, diagnostics using the DSM-5, individual therapy, group therapy, and discharge planning; at least two (2) years’ experience working within a psychiatric setting; two (2) years’ experience working in a supervisory capacity (which may have been obtained concurrently); and familiarity or experience in applying relevant standards from the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services.

  • Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Social Work; Experience working in a hospital and within government
