The University of Notre Dame (ND.jobs) is accepting applications for a Director of Study Abroad.

The Director of Study Abroad provides leadership, administrative oversight, and support for Notre Dame International study abroad opportunities. The Director has significant operational responsibilities: lead and supervise staff within Study Abroad, oversee the day-to-day operations of Study Abroad, manage and maintain the Study Abroad budget, be first point of contact University-wide for Study Abroad related issues and affairs, and direct a portfolio of programs operated or co-sponsored by Notre Dame International (NDI).

The Director of Study Abroad works closely throughout NDI and with campus units including Student Affairs, Academic Advisors, College Advising Deans, Registrar, Financial Aid, and Campus Safety. The Director is responsible for overseeing the strategy and operations plan of NDI programming, which includes recruitment, selection, and preparation of students for their study abroad programs, as well as contributing to continuous strategic planning and assessment of existing and potential programs. This position works collaboratively across NDI and other campus departments to support the overall goals of the institution.

Leadership
  • Work with NDI and campus leadership and stakeholders to establish and maintain a clear vision and direction for the study abroad team members
  • Design and implement a strategy that aligns education abroad opportunities with the University's vision and strategic plan
  • Develop, review and enhance policies, processes and technology systems such as Terra Dotta or industry-standard software to efficiently support Notre Dame education abroad
  • Work closely and effectively with NDI's Finance Team and accounting units on campus to ensure study abroad operations are in line with the university's financial protocols
  • Build strong collaborations and relationships with academic departments and faculty for the purposes of education abroad effectiveness and participation
  • Assist in the development of strategic agreements with universities abroad and program providers to increase overseas education opportunities
  • Advance NDI's strategic initiatives through Notre Dame's Global Gateways, Centers, and international staff by developing opportunities for students' global engagement through research, internships, community engagement or other experiential learning opportunities.
  • Provide leadership and supervision of the study abroad team. Direct projects, guide professional development and goal setting.

Administration/Management
Manage a portfolio of study abroad programs that include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Building a recruitment plan aligned with strategic goals of NDI
  • Advising students throughout the study abroad cycle
  • Evaluating and selecting qualified applicants
  • Developing a pre-departure framework in which students are academically, culturally, and experientially prepared for their study abroad experience
  • Ensuring program's strategic and operational compliance through collaboration with on-site partners
  • Generating reports with recommendations for change and/or maintenance of programs based on assessment data from reintegration meetings and debriefing
  • Liaising with ND academic, professional, and administrative offices
  • Conduct program assessment and evaluations
  • Provide programming throughout the study abroad cycle to meet the needs of the students

Risk Management
  • Work with NDI Travel Safety team and respond to emergencies and communicate with students, parents and campus constituents
  • Work with campus partners to address health concerns and student well-being while abroad
  • Review and revamp pre-departure orientations for students to endure that health and safety issues are adequately addressed
  • Maintain current knowledge of regulatory framework affecting study abroad such as Title IX and Clery laws.

Other initiatives, projects, and responsibilities as needed and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree
  • 5+ years of experience in leading study abroad in a higher education institution
  • In-depth understanding of the scholarship and practice of study abroad
  • Experience leading, managing, and developing staff effectively
  • Proven track record of collaborating with faculty and campus partners on projects impacting students
  • Solid analytical, Excellent problem-solving and strong analytical skills with proven ability to strategize, prioritize, and multi-task to meet goals and deadlines
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to positively engage people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Demonstrated experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and increasing and diversifying student participation in study abroad



Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. preferred
  • 7+ years of experience in leading a study abroad office
  • Experience in strategic planning, budgeting and financial planning
  • Previous experience with technology functions of an office interfacing directly with study abroad programming such as Terra Dotta or industry-standard software
  • Experience working in a large and complex research university
  • Significant international experience living, studying or working abroad
