Salary Range:$84.62 – $99.85

Job Summary:

Maintains total responsibility for the direction, leadership, management, and administration of all operations of the Department of Pharmacy in a tertiary care medical center. Operations include 24/7/365 inpatient services, including multiple pharmacy satellites; pediatrics, oncology, and an outpatient infusion center which operate in varying shifts, the preparation of intravenous and parenteral solutions, in-service education, and inventory control and security. Supervision is exercised over a substantial number of pharmacists and supportive staff. The Director of Pharmacy works collaboratively with the Department of Pharmacy leadership team to implement and maintain progressive and best practice health system pharmacy services. Works collaboratively with physicians, nurses and other health-care professionals. Directs all financial operations (including 340B compliance), personnel, quality, distribution systems, technology systems and all related professional aspects of current hospital/health-system pharmacy practice and systems. Provides fiscal oversight of Pharmacy cost center budgets and related forecasting of financial initiatives. Performs related work as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops policies and procedures as they relate to matters of administration and management of the Department of Pharmacy Services.
  • Establishes operating guidelines for all pharmacy services in compliance with Medical Center policies and any other rules and regulations established by regulatory agencies and boards.
  • Provides direction and coordinates day-to-day operations through respective pharmacy management leaders.
  • Develops and implements management reporting systems for statistical and quality control documentation.
  • Maintains total responsibility for assuring that the Department of Pharmacy is operating in accordance with the laws and regulations set forth by accrediting organizations and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains total responsibility for assuring that the Department of Pharmacy is adequately serving the patients and clinical staff of Westchester Medical Center.
  • Monitors the activities of all pharmacy personnel to ensure that they are maintaining optimum levels of productivity.
  • Maintains appropriate levels of qualified staffing and makes provisions for the professional development of staff.
  • Develops and implements innovative systems and procedures designed to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and scope of services provided by the Department of Pharmacy.
  • Maintains responsibility for the financial management of the Department of Pharmacy.
  • Maintains responsibility for the decision making process in drug product selection.
  • Develops and implements security systems within the Department and medications storage areas.
  • Develops and implements training for staff to keep them abreast of advances in pharmacy technology and pharmacology.
  • Assists in the review and implementation of drug related research studies performed at the Medical Center.
  • Coordinates the updating and maintenance of the hospital formulary.
  • Participates and serves on various Medical Center committees.
  • Maintains control over the requisitioning and dispensing of all drugs and pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Attends conferences, seminars, and meetings as required.
Qualifications/Requirements:

Experience:

Six years experience as a hospital pharmacist, two of which must have primarily been in the management and supervision of a hospital pharmacy.

Education:

Must be a graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy, Bachelors Degree in Pharmacy or Pharm-D required. A Master's degree in pharmacy or pharmacy administration preferred.

Licenses / Certifications:

Possession of a valid license and current registration as a Pharmacist issued by New York State

Other:

Thorough knowledge of the principles and concepts of the science of pharmacology and its practical application in a tertiary care teaching medical center; thorough knowledge of the principles and concepts of administration and management, especially as they relate to a large health care institution; thorough knowledge of the law and regulations set forth by governmental, accreditation and regulatory agencies that govern all aspects of operating a pharmacy service within a medical center; the ability to create, plan, and implement new procedures and systems to meet the changing needs of Westchester Medical Center and other institutions it services; the ability to relate well to a diversity of staff, Medical Center personnel, , patients, etc.; the ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of professional pharmacy staff; the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software; exercises sound professional judgment andresourcefulness; maintains physical condition commensurate with the requirements of the position.
