The Director, Scientific External Engagement ensures the development and execution of an integrated key opinion leader strategy. The Director is responsible for identifying appropriate opinion leaders and medical influencers and developing engagement plans that incorporate and align with all Medical Affairs functions.

The Director is a central point for all engagement planning. The Director works collaboratively with the Head of Field Medical, all Members of the Medical Affairs, Field Medical team(s), and cross-functional partners to manage strategic engagement and advising programs.

This experienced leader is accountable for the development and refinement of an engagement strategy. Via the Director’s leadership, external experts will recognize the credibility and strength of the Medical Affairs team and have a desire to expand engagement.

This position requires a passionate, high-energy, and results-oriented individual with a creative and analytical mind. A broad understanding of Medical Affairs and a proven history of executing innovative KOL engagement plans is required.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead the external expert identification, prioritization, and collaborative engagement planning process for the US Medical Affairs team.
  • Maintain an external expert data registry, including tracking activities/engagements, contracts, spending, and outputs to ensure compliance and the ability to report on engagement effectiveness.
  • Execute a social listening program to understand key topics of interest to key stakeholders and influencers to support the personalization of content and the refinement of engagement plans.
  • Profile and maintain up-to-date knowledge of key clinical trends, research agendas, and opportunities from US Oncology Cooperative Groups, Community networks, and key advocacy groups.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team to ensure effective and personalized engagement with external experts on research and educational initiatives and consultative/advising engagements.
  • Develop a stakeholder satisfaction program to ensure the engaged external experts are satisfied with the level and quality of engagement, responsiveness to inquiries, and resources from Medical Affairs.
  • Liaise with the Medical Directors to coordinate the US advising program to ensure diversity of advisory participation and collection of broad insights to support Clinical Development and Medical Affairs.
  • Utilizing field insights outputs, advance internal knowledge of clinical needs, and clinical trends and opportunities for innovation to support KOL-centered activities.
  • Lead external engagement planning for key medical congresses. Coordinate with Medical Affairs members and cross-functional partners to optimize engagement at congresses. Set timelines and develop the process and reporting mechanisms to align across the organization.
  • Provide expert knowledge and advice to support the Medical Affairs team as they develop innovative services and programs.
  • Compliance with all laws, rules, policies, etc.
  • Other strategic and operational duties as the Medical Affairs organization evolves.


Qualifications (Education & Experience)

  • Advanced medical and/or scientific degree (e.g., MD / DO, PhD, PharmD, PA, RD, MSc, NP). Doctorate-level training is highly preferred.
  • 10-12 years of work experience in the relevant area of Medical Affairs, including 4-5 years of field medical experience.
  • Strong experience in engaging key opinion leaders is required.
  • Prior work and relationships in the HEMA oncology therapeutic area are preferred
  • Experience working with cross-functional medical and commercial teams.
  • Strong and balanced skills set between strategy and operations with demonstrated ability to organize data, analyze information and develop clear plans and communications.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills to effectively communicate and build relationships with a broad spectrum of audiences at all organizational levels.
  • Solid analytical and strategic capabilities and business acumen along with demonstrated work ethic, integrity, and professional conduct.
  • Ability to produce and present clear, concise, and professionally written communications and presentations.
  • Candidates must be strong team players, take initiative, and think strategically and creatively.
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) skills, preferably MAC operating systems.
  • Required Travel: Up to 20% may be required.
