Job description
The following Behavioral / Mental Health Specialist position is available for the 2022-2023 School Year:
DISTRICT – BEHAVIORAL/MENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST
Certification Requirements & Qualifications:
§ A valid school psychology, social work, counselor, or teaching certification from the Michigan Department of Education or a Behavioral Sciences Degree or Behavioral Management Certificate or training and experience in the behavioral science areas
§ Awareness of Michigan Merit Curriculum, Certificate of Completion and Personal Curriculum
§ Experience with or the ability to implement effective instruction and positive behavior management supports, minimum of five years’ experience (preferred)
§ Experience with performing and communicating evaluations and assessments of students
§ Training in crisis prevention and intervention strategies: CPI (preferred)
§ Able to independently lift 50 pounds
§ Experience working with students in individual and group settings to support learning
§ Ability to successfully pass a background check
Required Skills:
§ Ability to work cooperatively with students, parents, and colleagues
§ Ability to make mental health assessments of student situations
§ Ability to clearly communicate assessment results and learning plans, in written and oral form, to parents and professionals
§ Ability to cooperatively participate in various district student support teams
§ Demonstrated experience working with “at-risk” and/or “behaviorally challenged” students
§ Expert knowledge of function-based intervention planning for developing behavior change strategies
§ Expert knowledge of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP)
§ Experience with research based instructional strategies
§ Demonstrated exceptional skill in roles of an educational leader: collaboration, action research, reflective practice, learner advocating
§ Ability to complete and maintain required records, forms, and reports in a professional and timely manner
§ Ability to be flexible, to work independently, and to contribute as a member of a team
§ Ability to prioritize tasks, allocate time, and maintain schedule flexibility
§ Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate behavior plans for use in general and special education settings
§ Ability and desire to become an active member of a school improvement process through participation in committees and activities
§ Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing
§ Good organizational and problem solving skills
§ Self-directedness and initiative when given a variety of tasks and responsibilities.
§ Possess physical abilities sufficient to employ physical intervention strategies when necessary, i.e. non-violent crisis intervention techniques
§ Enthusiastic and takes initiative
Responsibilities:
*Include but are not limited to the following
§ Provides leadership at the school level, designs, implements, coordinates, and evaluates a comprehensive behavior support program
§ Consult with classroom teachers and make recommendations for instruction
§ Work directly with identified students to adopt behaviors and increase academic performance
§ Provide diversified strategies and activities for targeted students
§ Act as a member of Student Support teams to plan for the needs of the total child
§ Assist in defining and measuring behaviors for the purpose of reinforcement, redirection, or behavior correction
§ Engage in and provide professional development to increase knowledge of behavior strategies
§ Involve and empower parents in the “student behavior intervention plan” processes
§ Consult with Social Workers, Psychologists, and other Student Services staff to intervene and respond to complex mental health needs
§ Review behavior referrals and data reports
§ Comply with all safety policies and practices
§ Provide support to teachers both individually and in groups
§ Assist in the implementation of behavioral plans, and transition plans for students
§ Provide formal and/or informal assessment of a student's academic status and learning styles
§ Work with outside agencies to assist families in solving student mental health problems
§ Responsible for the collection and analysis of data
§ Work with students and teachers to identify and implement accommodations and behavioral supports for students

§ Salary in accordance with the Teachers Master Agreement
