Domestic Abuse Services Housing Advocate

Domestic Abuse Services, a department of YWCA Greenwich, is seeking a skilled advocate to join our dedicated and highly trained team. YWCA Greenwich is a state designated domestic violence service provider and member of the CT Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Domestic Abuse Services delivers a full spectrum of services for those impacted by domestic violence. All services are free and confidential.

The YWCA Greenwich is seeking a compassionate individual with a commitment to working towards equity and social justice. The Housing Advocate will assist survivors of domestic violence in attaining housing rapidly and in maintaining safe and stable housing long term. In addition to direct housing services, the Housing Advocate will support survivors to increase income, ensure health insurance coverage, apply for state and federal benefits and help those who are able to maintain secure employment.

Candidates must be empathetic, trauma-informed and able to adapt to an ever-changing environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary role of the Housing Advocate is to provide housing advocacy and case management services to survivors/victims of domestic violence and/or human trafficking. Case management using a DV Housing First approach, includes trauma-informed, survivor-centered support to obtain housing stabilization, rebuild self-esteem, develop essential life skills and establish financial independence by helping survivors achieve their goals to increase income and self- sufficiency. Additionally, as is required in state standards and best-practice models, the Housing Advocate will provide survivors with supportive counseling, risk assessment, safety planning, goal setting, resources and referrals to other support services.

All services are to be delivered using a trauma-informed and client-defined approach. Candidates must be knowledgeable of community resources and other available programs and services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Bachelor’s degree in social service-related field

· Minimum of 1 year’s professional experience in a social service setting

· Comprehensive working knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence, as well as safety planning and client defined advocacy

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills, flexibility and basic computer skills

· Ability to integrate and manage large amounts of information and communicate this information appropriately and effectively

· Willingness to learn how to navigate multiple systems including housing, health, employment, substance use disorder treatment and government benefits

· Current certification as battered women’s counselor under CGS 52-146k regarding Privileged Communications and maintain certification with required annual continued education (provided)

· Personal qualities should include integrity, reliability, organization and commitment to the mission of YWCA Greenwich

· Reliable transportation and working mobile phone required

· Bilingual Spanish-speaking preferred

STATUS: Part-time (18 hours per week)

SUPERVISOR: Director of Domestic Abuse Services

COMPENSATION: $27-$30 per hour plus Starting Bonus. Benefits available.

The key programmatic areas are: Domestic Abuse Services, Aquatics, Childhood Education programs, Fitness memberships, Health & Recreation Programs, and the Center for Equity and Justice. More specifically:

YWCA Greenwich provides comprehensive direct services to victims of domestic violence through 24-hour hotlines, crisis intervention, counseling, court advocacy, and emergency sheltering. Recently we have added a Civil Legal Clinic and Financial Literacy Coaching to our array of free services to victims of domestic violence. In addition, the YWCA Greenwich provides prevention education through extensive training of key members of the community and age-appropriate domestic abuse prevention programs through the Greenwich Public Schools.

YWCA Greenwich has a nationally recognized swim team. The Dolphins, now in its 50th season with well over 200 swimmers, can point with pride to their fourth consecutive USA Swimming recognition as a “Silver Medal” Club, placing the team in the top 4% nationally.
