Job Corps is the largest nationwide no-cost residential career training program in the country and has been operating for more than 50 years. With a mission to “attract eligible young people, teach them the skills they need to become employable and independent, and place them in meaningful jobs or further education,” the program helps eligible young people ages 16 through 24 complete their high school education, trains them for meaningful careers, and assists them with obtaining employment. Job Corps has trained and educated over two million individuals since 1964.
At Job Corps, students have access to room and board while they learn skills in specific training areas for up to three years. Job Corps graduates either enter the workforce or an apprenticeship, go on to higher education, or join the military.
Paul Simon Chicago Job Corps Center provides education and vocational training for at-risk young adults between the ages of 16 to 24 years of age on a 33-acre residential campus. Our center is named in honor of Paul Simon, a former U.S. senator of the state of Illinois.
Dorm Coordinator
Reports to the Independent Living Manager and is a salaried, exempt position. Responsible for the operation of assigned dormitory and for the supervision, counseling and guidance of students assigned dorm in compliance with government and management directives. Demonstrates on-going commitment to preparing young people for the workforce by modeling, mentoring, and monitoring excellence in the eight Career Success Standards of: workplace relations and ethics; information management; communications; multicultural awareness; personal growth and development; career and personal planning; interpersonal skills and independent living.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates and abides by Aleut Core Values and operating principles.
- Supervises resident advisors assigned to the dormitory and ensures that they adequately meet all student needs.
- Serves as the Career Success Team (CST) leader for their respective dormitory.
- Provides monthly and weekly activity reports to Independent Living Manager.
- Maintains order and discipline in assigned dormitory while encouraging the development of self-discipline and an awareness of others.
- Ensures orderly, safe, clean, and healthy living conditions in the dormitory by scheduling and supervising clean-up and repair assignments.
- Oversees independent living and student leadership sessions, and reviews achievement records for accuracy.
- Assists students in handling special problems and conducts dormitory meetings.
- May participate in 6-month evaluation of Residential Advisors.
- Provides supervision for the cafeteria, laundry, special activities on and off center, and other program areas as assigned.
- Attends required staff training sessions.
- Facilitates prompt and appropriate assistance to students in the event of injury, illness, emotional trauma, arrest, trouble at home etc.
- Participates in the disciplinary process as established at the center, including zero tolerance for violence and drugs.
- Supports other center programs including recreation/avocation, behavior management, counseling, student government, etc.
- Facilitates the maintenance of folders containing information, forms, etc., for each student assigned in the dormitory.
- Oversees dormitory meetings for planning required activities and encourages leadership development.
- Cultivate and maintain a positive climate that is free of harassment, intimidation, bullying and disrespect in order to provide a safe place for staff and students to work and learn.
- Clearly communicates and consistently models appropriate CSS and employability skills including personal responsibility and computer fluency.
- Maintains accountability of staff, students, and property, adheres to safety practices in all areas of responsibility.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of an Associate of Art's degree or two (2) years work-related experience.
- One year of experience in dormitory management or work-related field working with at-risk youth.
- Previous Job Corps experience a plus.
- Able to complete all mandated training requirements per government and management directives.
- Valid driver's license in the state of employment with an acceptable driving record.
Additional Requirements: Ability to effectively relate to and communicate with disadvantaged youth. Ability to obtain and maintain CPA/First Aid/AED certification. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Able to read email daily and reply to messages in a timely manner based on urgency and importance. Knowledge of Education and Career Technical Training programs, and local social service and community assistance resources. Ability to inspire and motivate staff. Position requires an ability to operate office equipment. In addition, individual must be able to interact with team members and maintain an effective working relationship with all facility staff and departments.
Working Conditions: This position involves frequent sitting and occasional standing, walking, bending, stooping, and squatting. May need to climb, lift up to SO lbs., carry items, kneel, push, pull, run, and drive. Applicant must be able to see, hear, and speak.
Environmental Demands: Position requires ability to spend 5% of work time outside and 95% of work time indoors; ability to withstand moderate noise levels, including voice levels 90% of work time; ability to work in high temperature settings during the summer months; and ability to work in low temperature settings in winter months.
