Role Description: NuCurrent is looking for an Electrical Engineer with a Hardware focus who is motivated to work closely with a talented and diverse engineering group to drive wireless power design and system integration with software and mechanical, and test to deliver end customer products. The candidate will work very closely with senior electrical hardware, electromagnetics, software, and mechanical engineers to architect, design, layout and test wireless power systems and exhibit strong cultural values that put the customer first, go beyond the standard, show strong ownership, innovate further, and show strong people skills.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

  • Work with cross-functional engineering team to lead Wireless Power projects to success, gaining practical hands-on simulation, design, validation, and troubleshooting experience
  • Design wireless power solutions for a wide diversity of applications, including consumer electronics, industrial devices, automotive, medical, sporting goods, and others
  • Extensive contribution to system architecture design, as well as significant hands-on testing and optimization work

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design novel circuit solutions for essential wireless power subsystems such as amplifiers, rectifiers, adaptive tuning circuits, in-band modulation and demodulation circuits, protection mechanisms and control subsystems.
  • Implement a holistic design strategy, considering power output, efficiency, component sensitivity, communication robustness, EMI, form factor requirements and thermal performance.
  • Design use of simulation tools such as SPICE (or equivalent) for circuits, analytical derivations and test environment scripting using MATLAB and Schematic and PCB layout using Altium.
  • Testing and characterization of systems using Oscilloscopes, DMMs, E-loads, Battery Chargers, Thermal IR Cameras to measure efficiency, power, load-transient response, in-band communication robustness.
  • Testing and characterization of magnetic components and sub-systems using Spectrum Analyzers, field probes, function generators, Power Analyzers, HPNA (High Power VNAs), VNAs, Impedance Analyzer, and RF Power Amplifiers to measure coil characteristics, magnetic material saturation, subsystem’s performance difference between small and large signal, conducted and radiated emissions.
  • Collaborate with RF engineers, Magnetics Design Engineers, Mechanical Engineers and Data engineers to create automated system optimization tools that enable mass customization.
  • Work closely with engineering team to translate product requirements into engineering deliverables.
  • Work and adhere to project timelines to deliver on-time prototypes, test results, and documentation to customers.
  • Brief the company management on a regular basis on achievements and goals.
  • Contribute to the development of Intellectual Property.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Strong written & verbal communications skills, and good interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in use of electrical test equipment
  • Demonstrated success in resolution of technical challenges leveraging strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work individually and in small teams that may include contractors working remotely
  • Relentless and enterprising approach to solving problems
  • Passion for working and testing electrical hardware
  • Ability to multitask and be flexible
  • Experience with PCB layout software and implementation

PREFERABLE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Strong understanding of EM concepts (100 KHz – 100 MHz ideally)
  • Experience with RF PA’s (1 W to 50 W), tuning/impedance matching circuits
  • Experience in wireless power applications
  • Strong understanding in coil design for wireless power
  • Antenna/RF simulation, optimization & testing
  • Experience in hardware development for NFC
  • Experience with C programming and understanding communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART
  • Knowledge of EMI mitigation, and design for EMI management
