Brief Description

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) located in Cleveland, Ohio, is searching for an Electronic Equipment Maintainer to join our Operations Division.

Detailed Description

Duties:

Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and defect repair on all fare collection equipment, electronic signs, multiplex systems, radio communications equipment, and other electronic components and subsystems; assists with training to grade 4 coworkers; diagnoses equipment defects and makes necessary repairs; removes and re-installs equipment in vehicles and all stationary installations; moves coaches to work area. Practices safety precautions and measures at all times. Performs other duties of a similar nature as may be required. This position will promote a safe and secure atmosphere, follow all safety and security rules and perform other related duties as assigned..


Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

Applicants must have a high school diploma or its GED equivalent and a one year certificate from a college or a technical school. Degree in mechanics and/or electronics technology is preferred. Applicants must have at least one (1) year verifiable hands-on working experience with testing, diagnosing, repairing and maintaining electronic equipment (including basic circuit board repair), electrical wiring, and mechanical equipment. F.C.C. General Radio Telephone License or equivalent is preferred. Applicants must have a valid Ohio Driver’s License. with no more than 4 points. Bilingual abilities are a plus.


Successful candidates will be expected to pass a background check and post-offer physical that is job related and consistent with business necessity.

  • Environmental Conditions: This person will work in a District Garage environment with diesel fumes, airborne dust/dirt, and temperature extremes.
  • Physical Demands: Must work in and on vehicles – coaches, railcars, trucks, automobiles, etc. Must be able to climb a ladder. Must be able to service antennas on the rooftop of vehicles. Must be able to install and remove equipment weighing in excess of 75 lbs. Must be able to drive a vehicle. Must be able to load and unload equipment from vehicles. Must be able to work any shift schedule.
  • Mental Demands: Must be proficient in computer skills to record work orders, program software and radios. Must be able to do detail work on small circuit board components. Must be able to read and understand complex service manuals and electrical schematics. Must be able to communicate effectively both write and verbally. Must be able to use hand tools and operate sophisticated electrical test equipment.

EXAMINATION INFORMATION: Candidates selected to participate in the hiring process will be notified of the exact time and place of the examination. The examination process will consist of three parts: a written examination, performance assessment and/or interview, and record evaluation (for internal candidates only). Candidates must attain a minimum of 70% on all parts of the process, except 60% on the interview portion, to move forward in the process.

Weights for a final score will be assigned as follows for internal candidates: Written 50%, Performance Assessment and/or Interview 35%, Record Evaluation15%. All candidates must score a minimum composite score of 70% in order to establish eligibility for the portion. Internal candidates must meet all record evaluation criteria in order to gain the 15% weighting. Records evaluation information includes a review of the following:

  • 5 or more absence occurrences
  • 2 or more AWOL or absence control suspensions
  • 3 or more active written reminders (regardless of the level)
  • 5 or more misses (regardless of whether they are active or not active)
  • 4 or more active tardies
  • Drug or alcohol suspension
  • Commercial Drivers License (CDL) suspension
  • Active Decision Making Leave (DML)

Applicants who do not pass the written examination and/or performance assessment(s) must wait six (6) months to reapply after the initial written examination date.

Additional Information: The performance of these duties may be required at any time of the day or night, any day and night of the week. The position is a bargaining unit position.
