EMERGENCY PROTECTIVE ORDER (EPO) REFEREE
(Official classification: Court Referee - EPO)
Salary: $793.13 per 24-hour shift*
(*Effective 9/23/22)

DEADLINE TO APPLY
This recruitment will be open on a continuous basis until the needs of the Court have been met and may close at any time, without notice.

Examples of Duties

THE POSITION AND DUTIES
Under limited supervision, the Emergency Protective Order Referee ("EPO Referee") serves as an "on call" subordinate judicial officer representing the Orange County Superior Court. Incumbents respond to requests by local law enforcement and related agencies; issue ex parte emergency protective orders and temporary gun violence restraining orders by telephone or through other electronic devices; confer with law enforcement officers, county officials, witnesses and others to secure information relevant to specific determinations and orders; and submit detailed and timely written reports, records, documents and forms as ordered by the Court. EPO Referees work on an extra-help, at-will basis and report to the General Counsel.

WORK SCHEDULE INFORMATION

  • Each EPO Referee is assigned to be "on-call" during 24-hour shifts of time, which will be scheduled from 9:00 a.m. one day until 9:00 a.m. the following day.
  • Each EPO Referee will be assigned a set schedule of approximately three to four 24-hour shifts per month. The shifts can, and often do, occur on weekends and holidays.
  • Generally, all work is off-site, from home or other location, but the EPO Referee must be accessible and prepared to handle tasks assigned throughout the entire work shift. Partial shift absences will not be allowed. Telework must be completed from a location within the State of California and employees may be required to report on-site to address business needs.
  • Most of the shift time scheduled is stand-by time and not work time, where the EPO Referee is free to engage in other activities as long as the EPO Referee is available telephonically and via email to perform the duties assigned when contact is made.
  • Compensation will be based on working the entire 24-hour shift.
  • When time off necessitating a schedule change is desired, the EPO Referee will be responsible to obtain coverage from another EPO Referee to work the shift(s) desired in addition to his/her own scheduled shifts. When substitutions are made, the EPO Referee originally assigned must notify the Office of General Counsel of the substitution.
