RT&T, a joint venture of InDyne, Inc. and Amentum Services, Inc. is the prime contractor to support the Atlantic Range Technical Support Services (ARTSS) for the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) headquartered in Patuxent River, MD, and with locations in Maryland, Virginia, and California.

ARTSS supports Atlantic Test Ranges (ATR) and Atlantic Targets and Marine Operations (ATMO) in research and development, engineering, maintenance, operation, support of facilities, systems, and equipment in order to meet the engineering development and operational testing and fleet training missions for some of the world’s premier systems. Our work with the U.S. Navy keeps the warfighter safe by testing systems before they are used in combat, and we are hiring personnel to support this important mission.

Background Information:

This full-time position in the science, mathematical, and technical support side of the Range Safety Office assists in providing technical research and developing appropriate safety-of-use guidance supporting the safe execution of missions of the Atlantic Test Range (ATR). This position is part of a technical team that provides both direct support to range safety personnel, especially with respect to ensuring the ability to provide equivalent levels of safety for new and emerging testing requirements.

The foundational basis of this position includes: (1) the physical science of the various hazards, including hazards associated with manned and unmanned airborne vehicles, the testing of aerial weapon systems, the outdoor use of directed energy systems, and autonomous systems; (2) the understanding of controls and barriers that may be used to reduce exposure and mitigate harmful effects of the various range hazards; (3) the mathematical basis for assessing risk of hazard occurrence, risk of hazard exposure, and risk of harm using both deterministic and probabilistic models for the various hazards; and (4) the use of safety cases to relate range safety claims to supporting evidence via structured arguments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Major duties of this position include the following:

  • Research the underlying phenomenology of hazard sources and possible harms, including models useful for assessing risk and understanding thresholds for evaluating risk
  • Development of guidance regarding controls and hazard patterns to assist MRSOs
  • Development of safety cases for making and documenting recommendations, especially in support of the RSO and as part of range safety products, e.g., range safety notes, record of decision documents, and the range safety manual
  • Assistance in collaboration with other ranges at a national level, including the involvement in developing consensus guidance as required
  • In addition, duties involving the team's operation, which include, but are not limited to, maintaining proper notes and documentation, supporting technical interchange meetings, and professional correspondence are part of this position.
  • Some overtime and travel may be required

Educational, Experience, and Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline from a school of engineering accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or in a related discipline such as Physics, Mathematics, or Computer Science from an accredited college or university is required
  • Applicant must be a self-starter, flexible, and team-oriented to be able to work smoothly as a member of a technical team
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and successfully pass Drug Screening

Security Clearance:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a United States Department of Defense (DoD) issued Top Secret Clearance

Work Conditions:
Conditions will vary. Most work is performed in enclosed buildings, but some outside work may be required. Work will include sitting, standing, walking, lifting and reaching. Applicant should be capable of lifting 50-100 lbs. assisted by other employees. Vision abilities needed to perform this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus.
