Job description
JOB DESCRIPTION: Instructor - pre-university engineering summer camp
Are you interested in sharing your technical knowledge and skills to help inspire students to pursue STEM careers? We are looking for highly motivated, energetic and dedicated people who want to be instructors at our TryEngineering Summer Institute. The TryEngineering Summer Institute is a ten-day, co-ed residential summer camp to introduce rising 9th through 12th grade students to engineering and technology and inspire them to consider STEM careers.
Located at: Rice University in Houston, TX
Our proprietary curriculum was designed specifically for this program by IEEE to be not only educational on an introductory, college level, but to be hands-on and fun. There are no tests and quizzes, to create a stress free learning environment for every student of every skill level. Our classes are small so students receive plenty of personalized help and guidance. We also feature in-camp speakers like engineers, we host speaker panels, and we even go on field trips off-campus to cool spots where we can see engineering in action.
Our entire staff, directors, counselors and students live in the dorms, and have 3 square meals provided throughout the duration of the program and staff training.
Our teachers have the option to live in the dorms, and have all meals provided throughout the duration of the program and staff training. If you’d prefer to live at home and commute daily, that is up to you! We can work that out with you individually.
Teachers are responsible for the students when they are in class. Class is typically 9am - 4pm. Be prepared to be in class early to get set up and stay after 4 to clean up, handle stragglers, etc. It’s fluid. Everything is done inside the intention of providing breakthrough academics and the opportunity for personal development and responsibility to each and every child.
Teamwork: You are part of a team. You can lean on each other, and even communicate with staff at other locations. What's working? What’s not working? Tips and tricks from one classroom to the other can be invaluable! Be in communication… That's where the real work gets done!
What the job looks like:
1. You’re expected to operate with integrity at all times.
2. You’re part of a team.
3. The team is ultimately responsible for the safety and well-being of every student.
4. The team is accountable to having fun. When you are authentically having fun, the students are also having a blast.
5. We are committed to the students achieving breakthrough results academically and personally.
6. You are a person who is flexible, who can think on their feet, and can work with whatever circumstances may occur that we can’t predict today.
7. So… safety first… then fun… and we know that when camp is safe and fun, learning occurs in huge amounts!
8. We are about academic breakthroughs and personal development inside the context of being safe and having fun. Your enthusiastic participation is vital to this mission.
These programs are all about being safe, and feeling like they are in a safe environment, and within that context they are having vast amounts of fun. We put students ages 13-17 on a college campus and we want them to have the best time possible! It's about being part of a team, and having fun.
