We are currently seeking to hire an Engineering Technician III to support our Instrumentation team in support of the Navy’s Weapons Survivability Lab (WSL) at the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, CA. SA-TECH is helping ensure the DoD is provided mission-effective survivable air platforms now, and in the future, and the WSL is the Navy’s field activity for weapons systems non-nuclear survivability, weapons lethality, and Live Fire Test and Evaluation (LFT&E) and conducts survivability testing for all three major services. WSL also provides resources for rapid innovative solutions to unique prototyping needs of the Navy fleet.
The Engineering Technician III performs assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed; selects or adapts standard procedures or equipment using fully applicable precedents; receives initial instructions, equipment requirements and advice from a supervisor or engineer as needed; and performs recurring work independently. Routine work is reviewed on completion and non-routine work may be reviewed in progress for technical adequacy or conformity with instructions.
Typical duties of the position are (but may not be limited to):

  • Constructs components, subunits, or simple models or adapts standard equipment; may troubleshoot and correct malfunctions.
  • Conducts various tests or experiments which may require minor modifications in test setups or procedures as well as subjective judgments in measurement, selection, preparation, and operation of standard test equipment; records test data.
  • Extracts and compiles a variety of engineering data from field notes, manuals, lab reports, etc., and processes data and identifies errors or inconsistencies; selects methods of data presentation.
  • Assists in design modifications by compiling data related to design, specifications, and materials that are pertinent to specific items of equipment or component parts; develops information concerning previous operational failures and modifications; and using judgment and initiative upon recognizing inconsistencies or gaps in data, seeks sources to clarify information.
  • Performs standardized assignments involving a sequence of related operations on project test articles such as aerospace vehicles, propulsion systems, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, electrical systems, airframe and related structural/mechanical components, flight controls and related sub-systems, as well as weapons systems.
  • Assists in the performance of test and evaluation of aircraft survivability technology.
  • Fabricates, installs, tests, calibrates, modifies and repairs control systems and electronic measurement systems for data acquisition and data reduction of experimental project data typically made up of components such as digital data recorders, oscilloscopes, pulse code modulators (PCM), A-D converters, microprocessors, video systems/cameras, monitors, recorders, digital annotation devices, sequencers, micro and minicomputers, signal conditioning amplifiers, and electromechanical solid state relays.
  • Assists project engineers and technicians during design, development, and installation of project test data acquisition and data reduction systems with typical test data acquisition including linear motion measurement, ballistic velocities, vibration, pressures, temperatures, fluid flow, strain, RPM, optical flash detection, range timing and video.
  • Performs maintenance, repairs, and updates of WSL electrical/electronic test facility systems to include (but not limited to) video systems, instrumentation rooms, control rooms, test support systems, and calibration equipment.
  • Fabricates and assembles printed wiring boards, wire wrap assemblies, as well as solders to WS 6536 standards.
  • Controls and monitors WSL electrical/electronic/photo test facility systems during test conduction.
  • Performs as a member of a project work team on project test article preparations, modifications, assembly, setup and teardown.
  • Plans and conducts work from blueprints, drawings, test plans, and technical publications.

Work Conditions:

  • Conditions will vary as work may be performed indoors or outdoors.
  • Work may be occasionally performed from elevated work platforms (with fall protection harnesses) and in temperatures ranging from below freezing to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Position will include 45% standing, 20% bending, 15% reaching, 5% sitting, 5% walking and 10% lifting.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Overtime is a requirement of this position

Requirements:Education/Experience/Skills:

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Formal military, trade school, or equivalent on-the-job training commensurate with duties.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience with instrumentation, electrical, and/or electronic system setup, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
  • Capable of installing, adjusting, and calibrating data acquisition sensors, to include various forms of photography and video collection systems.
  • Knowledge in the proper operation of voltmeters, signal generators, and transducer calibration equipment, with the ability to troubleshoot faults in cables, relays, controls, and related equipment.
  • Must be able to read and interpret schematics and/or engineering diagrams.
  • Soldering skills/certification a plus.
  • Must possess an ability to work tactfully with professional engineers, technicians and management staff at all levels of effort.
  • Familiarity with test procedures and safety in an RDT&E environment, and with modern military aircraft and weapons systems.
  • Experience working at a government site/facility.
  • Current Driver’s License required; must be able to be insured through company’s vehicle insurance policy while driving work/government/rental vehicles during working hours, and for the duration of employment.
  • U.S. Citizenship required and you must be able to obtain a U.S. DoD Security Secret Clearance prior to start date and maintain a Secret clearance throughout employment.
  • All candidates will be required to pass background screening to include SSN, Driver Record, and Criminal Background Investigation.
