Enterprise Analytics Database Developer
Job description
The Enterprise Analytics Database Developer reports to the Manager of the Enterprise Analytics Group (EAG) in Stanley Consultant’s Shared Services group. The Database Developer will be responsible for owning and maintaining a new database environment that will be created in the coming months. This role will work closely with our consultant resources to create a new database environment from the ground up and become a SME in the reporting database that is created. The Database Developer will be responsible for monitoring the new environment, creating necessary objects, performance tuning, and other such administrative tasks. This role will also be responsible for creating SSRS and Power BI reporting as the need arises.
The EAG is a small and nimble team; the Database Developer will need to be comfortable wearing multiple hats and working on a new and growing team that the wider organization is just learning to leverage. The environment is currently largely Microsoft-based (e.g., SQL Server, SSRS, SSIS, Power BI), but parts of the company are beginning to work with large and sometimes unstructured data sets – expectation is that EAG will work in standard enterprise technologies, but where required will deploy the technologies needed to support the business.
The role will play a pivotal position in expanding the group into a more mature data team, and the ideal candidate will both have previous experience creating, either alone or on a team, and maintaining an enterprise level data warehouse solution, while also having the capability to flex and learn new approaches as the team and the company both grow.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Help create and maintain a new database environment, using best practices, that will be used exclusively by the Enterprise Analytics department
- Work closely with the report developers to design, create, and manage complex objects (i.e. functions, scripts, stored procedures and triggers) in the database using best practices to facilitate accurate reporting via our reporting platforms
- Develops SQL queries within a SQL Server environment to support various business reports and dashboards
- Develop and maintain an ongoing library of database documentation
- Troubleshoot database related issues in a timely manner to ensure application and reporting uptime
- Monitor and maintain the health of the databases the Enterprise Analytics Group internally own and use
- Create ETL scripts to transfer data from disparate sources to a single database for use in reporting
- Work with external client’s IT departments to connect to their systems and migrate data to our environment using best security practices
- Work closely with internal development teams to review code and provide performance tuning where necessary
- Create and maintain a data dictionary of all data that lives within the Enterprise Analytics database(s)
- Help maintain the organization’s data warehouse marts, including data validation and quality control processes and practices
- Works closely with other teams on the processes used to continuously collect reliable and actionable time-based project and business financial data sets
- Collaborates with staff at all levels to effectively embed data collection and analytics into business planning, operational management, and company strategic planning
- Develops ad hoc and operational dashboards in Power BI, SharePoint, SSRS, or other appropriate and secure venues
- Diligently protects company and client data and remains compliant with all data security policies and agreements
Required skills, education, and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree and/or recognized certificate information technology, computer science, or an adjacent field
- Certificate in Database Development and/or Administration
- 3+ years working as a Database Developer/Administrator
- Prior experience owning and maintaining databases
- Advanced proficiency in writing complex SQL queries and performance tuning
- Ability to develop detailed technical manuals and database diagrams
- Independent competency in SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server Integration Services
- Exceptional critical thinking and troubleshooting abilities
- Ability to work under pressure as the prime resource for databases on a small analytics team
- Proficiency with MS Office 365, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and occasional ambiguous data requirements
- Familiarity with Power BI a plus, but not required
- Familiarity with the engineering consulting industry a plus, but not required
