The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Pacific Cascade Region. Are you someone who loves the outdoors? Are you interested in being a part of managing and maintaining over 2000 miles of forest roads in Southwest Washington? If so, we are seeking self-motivated and conscientious individuals to join our team of professionals as an Equipment Operator. These positions are responsible for operating, maintaining, and transporting equipment and associated supplies. You will work together with other operators, engineers, and other state employees across diverse landscapes to accomplish and track a wide variety of forest road maintenance projects, such as rocking, routine drainage maintenance, stream crossing structure installation, and abandonment. To be successful in this position, you will need not only a solid understanding of heavy equipment operation, but also excellent verbal, writing, and listening skills to communicate and collaborate with the rest of the team. Your experience, skills, and positive attitude will be essential in contributing to the success of our Heavy Equipment Program and the health and productivity of Washington’s lands and waters to meet the needs of present and future generations.
Responsibilities:
- Operate excavators, dozers, backhoes, graders, dump trucks and pups, tilt trailers, culvert trailers, rollers, bobcats, compactors, pumps, and other equipment.
- Assemble culverts and bridge components and perform other manual construction tasks as needed to complete projects.
- Install erosion control materials and products on various ground types, including steep terrain.
- Perform routine maintenance and emergency repair required to maintain the equipment in a productive state.
- Interpret engineering designs and project prescriptions.
- Complete required paper work and keep records using iPad or iPhone.
- Attend trainings and meetings as required or approved.
- Build and maintain professional working relationships.
- Engage in critical decision making.
- Maintain and demonstrate a safe working environment that enforces Agency guidelines as well as L&I and OSHA rules.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years operation and routine maintenance experience on heavy equipment including bulldozers, cranes, excavators, heavy trucks or similar equipment.
- Working understanding of Washington Labor and Industries Safety and Health rules for Construction (WAC-296-155) and other applicable Safety and Health regulations and policy.

- Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
- Must be able to work outdoors, sometimes alone, in remote locations along forest roads and in construction sites associated with forest roads. Includes steep slopes, both natural and constructed, loose ground, and water, both standing and moving. Includes routinely and repeatedly lifting at least 70 lbs. to waist level.
- The incumbent in this position is required to travel with occasional overnight travel approximately 2-4 weeks per year.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- Must have a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License and a valid Medical Card.
- Pre-employment CDL verification, work history background check and drug testing will be required as a condition of employment. This position may be subject to pre-employment, random and reasonable suspicion drug testing

- 2000 or more hours operation and routine maintenance experience in bulldozers, motor graders, excavators, heavy trucks or similar.
- Two or three years' experience in Forest Road setting.
- Have a working understanding of Washington State Forest Practices Act and Rules, DNR Habitat Conservation Plan and associated policies, rules and standard practices/best management practices.
